Memories from Februaries spent in the #Atacama desert. Team members would take nights off to recover from the heat and do laundry in town, pick up supplies at the hardware store.

Often we had to get those foil-faced windshield covers to protect computers that would overheat in the sun.

Driving through that otherworldly #landscape was exhilarating.

La rivalità tra Stati Uniti e Cina è alle stelle. È proprio il caso di dirlo dopo che la Casa Bianca ha fatto pressioni su Argentina e Cile affinché rivedano due progetti cinesi per la costruzione di telescopi nei deserti andini. Gli astronomi temono che ciò possa ostacolare la ricerca. Ai piedi delle Ande argentine, l'enorme radiotelescopio progettato da Pechino sorge in uno dei luoghi più prestigiosi al mondo per l'osservazione delle stelle, sotto un cielo incontaminato dall'inquinamento luminoso. Si trova inoltre sul lato opposto del pianeta rispetto a Pechino, offrendo alla Cina una finestra su metà del cielo che altrimenti non potrebbe osservare. Ma il telescopio installato presso l'osservatorio Cesco nella provincia di San Juan non capta alcun segnale. Dopo le ripetute pressioni del governo statunitense, l'Argentina ha interrotto il completamento del progetto. Privo di componenti fondamentali, il telescopio ora giace smontato, con la sua gigantesca antenna puntata verso il cielo ma "cieca".
Le stelle sopra il Sud America sono diventate punti nevralgici di una lotta geopolitica, con alti funzionari americani che cercano di bloccare i piani degli astronomi per timore che la Cina possa utilizzarli per scopi militari. L'amministrazione Trump afferma di star applicando una versione aggiornata della Dottrina Monroe, in parte per contrastare la crescente influenza della Cina nell'emisfero occidentale. Cina che è un partner commerciale chiave per molti paesi dell'America Latina, a partire dall'Argentina, e sta cercando di costruire legami scientifici e di sicurezza. It is precisely the case to say after the White House pressured Argentina and Chile to review two Chinese projects for the construction of telescopes in the Andean deserts. Astronomers fear that this could hinder research. At the foot of the Argentine Andes, the enormous radiotelescope designed by Beijing rises in one of the most prestigious locations in the world for star observation, under a sky unpolluted by light pollution. It is also located on the opposite side of the planet from Beijing, offering China a window on half of the sky it would otherwise be unable to observe. But the telescope installed at the Ceso observatory in the province of San Juan does not detect any signals. After repeated pressure from the U.S. government, Argentina halted the completion of the project. Without key components, the telescope now lies disassembled, with its giant antenna pointed at the sky but “blind.”

The stars over South America have become nerve centers of a geopolitical struggle, with high-ranking American officials seeking to block astronomers’ plans for fear that China could use them for military purposes. The Trump administration claims to be applying an updated version of the Monroe Doctrine, partly to counter China’s growing influence in the Western Hemisphere. China, a key trading partner for many Latin American countries, starting with Argentina, is seeking to build scientific and security ties. Its relations in the region could be the subject of discussion in official talks that will take place this week in Beijing between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Last year, Chile blocked a Chinese project for an astronomical observatory in the Atacama desert, following strong U.S. pressure. And in the case of the Ceso radiotelescope, which would be the largest of its kind in South America, authorities detained some key components in customs for nine months. According to a document from the head of the Argentine government’s cabinet, procedural violations in renewing the agreement with China prevented the project’s realization.

Una condena por fraude millonario en Atacama está generando fuertes cuestionamientos… no solo por el delito, sino por cómo se investigó.
El exintendente Francisco Sánchez fue declarado culpable de estafa contra la minera Atacama Kozan, en un caso donde se utilizaron documentos falsos durante años para justificar gastos personales. Pero lo más polémico: la Fiscalía de Atacama decidió no perseverar en la causa por “falta de antecedentes”.
Aun así, una querella privada llevó el caso a juicio… y logró una condena unánime.
