Agi: Il 25enne calabrese sotto osservazione: test Hantavirus allo Spallanzani

AGI - Un giovane 25enne residente a Villa San Giovanni (RC) è attualmente sotto osservazione precauzionale dopo essere stato sullo stesso volo di una donna deceduta per Hantavirus a Johannesburg. Sebbene inizialmente si fosse parlato di sintomi sospetti, la sindaca Giusy Caminiti ha smentito categoricamente ogni malessere: il ragazzo sta bene, è asintomatico e sta trascorrendo la quarantena presso la propria abitazione.
Come previsto dal protocollo del Ministero della Salute, domani verranno effettuati i prelievi biologici che saranno poi analizzati dall'Istituto Spallanzani di Roma. Al momento, non è previsto alcun trasferimento del giovane presso il nosocomio capitolino.
Il bilancio globale dell'OMS
Il Direttore Generale dell'Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, ha fornito gli ultimi aggiornamenti sul focolaio legato alla nave da crociera MV Hondius. Ad oggi si contano 11 casi totali (nove confermati come influenza andina e due probabili), inclusi tre decessi. È importante sottolineare che non si verificano nuove vittime dallo scorso 2 maggio.
La sorveglianza sanitaria per i passeggeri della nave è stata ufficialmente estesa: il conteggio della quarantena partirà dal 10 maggio, portando il termine della sorveglianza rafforzata al 21 giugno.
Monitoraggio e rischi futuri
Secondo l'OMS, il rischio per la salute pubblica globale rimane basso. Tuttavia, poiché il virus delle Ande è l'unico Hantavirus capace di trasmettersi da persona a persona, non si esclude l'identificazione di nuovi contagi nelle prossime settimane a causa del lungo periodo di incubazione.
I governi dei paesi di provenienza dei passeggeri sono stati incaricati di garantire il monitoraggio rigoroso e l'isolamento immediato di chiunque presenti sintomi, al fine di contenere la diffusione del virus e mantenere stabile la situazione medica.

Global OMS Balance
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, provided the latest updates on the outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship. To date, there are a total of 11 cases (nine confirmed as Andean influenza and two probable), including three deaths. It is important to note that there have been no new deaths since May 2nd.

Health surveillance for passengers on the ship has been officially extended: the quarantine count will begin on May 10th, bringing the end of reinforced surveillance to June 21st.

According to the WHO, the risk to global public health remains low. However, as the Andean virus is the only Hantavirus capable of transmission from person to person, the identification of new infections in the coming weeks cannot be ruled out due to the long incubation period.

The governments of the countries of origin of the passengers have been tasked with ensuring rigorous monitoring and immediate isolation of anyone presenting symptoms, in order to contain the spread of the virus and maintain the medical situation stable.

La rivalità tra Stati Uniti e Cina è alle stelle. È proprio il caso di dirlo dopo che la Casa Bianca ha fatto pressioni su Argentina e Cile affinché rivedano due progetti cinesi per la costruzione di telescopi nei deserti andini. Gli astronomi temono che ciò possa ostacolare la ricerca. Ai piedi delle Ande argentine, l'enorme radiotelescopio progettato da Pechino sorge in uno dei luoghi più prestigiosi al mondo per l'osservazione delle stelle, sotto un cielo incontaminato dall'inquinamento luminoso. Settant’anni, una vita da ornitologo, Leo Schilperoord è stato identificato come il “paziente zero” dell’epidemia di hantavirus che si è diffusa a bordo della nave da crociera Mv Hondius, provocando la morte dello stesso uomo olandese, della moglie e di una cittadina tedesca. In totale, al momento, sono 9 i contagiati ma diversi altri casi sospetti si registrano tra i passeggeri dell’imbarcazione, evacuata definitivamente nelle scorse ore nel porto di Tenerife.
Come già emerso negli scorsi giorni, Schilperoord potrebbe aver contratto il virus durante un’escursione in una discarica, come accade non di rado agli appassionati di birdwatching. Insieme alla moglie avrebbe visitato quella di Ushuaia, città nel sud dell’Argentina. In quel luogo avrebbe contratto il ceppo andino del virus, l’unico hantavirus noto per trasmettersi da uomo a uomo. Il virus si diffonde attraverso l’inalazione di particelle aerosolizzate provenienti da escrementi e urina di roditori.
Originari del paesino olandese di Haulerwijk, Schilperoord e sua moglie, Mirjam, anche lei deceduta, era in viaggio in Sud America da diverso tempo e avevano visitato Cile, Uruguay e Argentina. Appassionati di ornitologia, aveva anche pubblicato uno studio, nel corso degli Anni ottanta, su una rivista specializzata dei Paesi Bassi. Proprio quella passione li aveva portati nella discarica di Ushuaia lo scorso 27 marzo, probabilmente per avvistare il caracara gola bianca, un rapace conosciuto anche come il caracara di Darwin in onore del celebre biologo evoluzionista.

Seventy years old, a life as an ornithologist, Leo Schilperoord has been identified as the “patient zero” of the hantavirus epidemic that spread aboard the cruise ship Mv Hondius, causing the death of the man himself, his wife, and a German resident. In total, there are currently 9 infected individuals, but several other suspected cases are being registered among the ship’s passengers, who were definitively evacuated in the past hours at the port of Tenerife.

As has already emerged in recent days, Schilperoord may have contracted the virus during an excursion to a landfill, as often happens among birdwatching enthusiasts. Together with his wife, he visited the one in Ushuaia, a city in southern Argentina. There, he contracted the Andean strain of the virus, the only hantavirus known to transmit from human to human. The virus spreads through the inhalation of aerosolized particles from the excrement and urine of rodents.

Originally from the Dutch village of Haulerwijk, Schilperoord and his wife, Mirjam, who also died, had been traveling in South America for some time and had visited Chile, Uruguay, and Argentina. Passionate about ornithology, he had also published a study, in the 1980s, in a specialized Dutch magazine. It was that passion that led them to the Ushuaia landfill last March 27th, likely to observe the white-collared caracara, a raptor also known as Darwin’s caracara in honor of the famous evolutionary biologist.

So, it wasn’t 23 people who got off the boat at St Helens, it was more than 30. Those 30 have dispersed around the globe, so fun! Thankfully, #Andean hantavirus, while still deadly, and while transmissible from human to human, is not an easy spread like flu or covid. So, this is not a lock it all down event, as far as we know from information available.

A #KLM flight attendant who was on a plane with some of the sick passengers is currently in hospital with mild symptoms, but no test result. A #Swiss man is in hospital. Two people in the US #Georgia are quarantined, two in the #UK quarantined, and some folks are floating around #Texas somewhere and they don’t know where everyone else is yet.
