Sequential Artists Workshop
SAW is a community of comics-makers, by comics-makers, for comics-makers. Whatever your skill levels or interest, we're here to share your passion and offer courses to help you build a creative practice that enriches your story and your voice. Founded in 2011 by acclaimed indie cartoonist, Tom Hart, SAW is a non-profit organization that operates in person and online. You can read more about our story on our main website. Today the team is made up of artists who have gone through SAW's programs as either students or instructors and believe in bringing affordable, quality education to aspiring cartoonists from all backgrounds. Keep an eye out for regular posts from Tom Hart, Meg Lentz, and Karlo Antunes. SAW also supports member-created, volunteer-run FREE events like the monthly Wednesday Night Workshop lead by Michael Aschner; Thursday Draw Jam lead by a team of volunteers including AJ Delp and Libby Dean; The Underdrawing Club by Hannah M and Adrean Clark; Friday Meetups with Dante Gabriel Hookey; Sunday Open Studios and bi-weekly Procreate skills swap lead by Donna Druchunas. If you’re interested in creating your own event or community-run workshop, please fill out this form. Community Guidelines We ask that everyone abide by our simple community guidelines: Demonstrate Respect and Empathy. We've all been brought together by our love for comics and comics creation, and we know there is a lot of difference that can exist outside of that. Consider other people's experiences when making posts, commenting on other posts and participating in events. This includes offering content warnings when sharing work, acknowledging requests for accommodations from peers and avoiding discriminatory language. Prioritize Accessibility. Like you, we're still learning the best way to make sure that as many people as possible can participate at SAW. We're developing procedures that we hope will support the implementation of this for our staff, instructors, students and members. For example, here's our Guide to Best Practices for Virtual Events at SAW. We are continuing to develop these procedures and will add them here as they are completed, as well as posting them to the general activity feed. Be Supportive. Support and encouragement are one of the distinguishing features of the SAW community. We want to build and sustain a culture of celebration in comics. Share Generously. Whether it's your personal discoveries, your latest work, your accumulated learning resources, we invite everyone to share as much as they can. Our instructors and admin staff will endeavor to do the same. Be Constructive. Growth comes from sensitive, honest feedback. That feedback should always help the recipient grow and improve. Avoid Spamming, Trolling or Harassing other members. Yes, we want to see what you're doing outside of the SAW Network (including your social media handles and website information in your personal bio is a good place to start). No, we don't want this space to be filled with posts that make others uncomfortable or limit the visibility of learning opportunities shared in the network. Issues or Concerns If you're ever made uncomfortable in the network or see something that needs attention from an administrator, please reach out to either Tom, Karlo or Emma. We also invite members to utilize our Incident Response Form so that any incident can be investigated and we can respond with appropriate action including providing mediation, issuing warnings and removing people from the network. Building Community At the end of the day, SAW belongs to you! Do you have an idea you’d like to implement in the SAW Community? We’d love to hear it. Reach out to Emma and share what you want it to be!
