Chuck Schumer personifies so much that has gone wrong with the Democratic party. His dreadful and far from prophetic 2016 claim that “for every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia” sits alongside his embrace of the Wall Street financial industry as evidence of that party's need for a progressive renewal.
So I sat down to read his book on antisemitism in the USA without high expectations and finished it (it's a quick read) with a sense of not having engaged with a work of much political originality.
What did impress me, however, was Schumer's account of his own life as a Jew and his family history. Read the book to understand how this history has informed his identity as a Jew, an American, and a Zionist,* and remember that a similar body of commitments, memories, emotions, and experiences have shaped the lives of a multitude of Jewish contemporaries of Schumer. Younger Jewish Americans will no doubt write differing accounts when they reach Schumer's age.
What about Schumer's main purpose in writing this book , his warning? Although he's not the first person to say so, I do think he is, alas, correct to warn of a resurgence of antisemitism in the USA. His comments about that resurgence taking place on the left of US politics as well as on the right should be heeded by US progressives, even though the Trump administration has exploited fears like those expressed by Schumer to wage an unjust war on higher education.
*Anybody who supports the existence of the state of Israel is a Zionist, so all of those who support a two state solution are Zionists by definition. Do not be bullied into thinking that Zionists must deny Palestinians the right to a sovereign state too.
