So sorry to everyone I owe replies to … the move was far harder on me than I anticipated. A number of items need to be completely thrown out which is a huge unexpected expense… and only about half my stuff actually got moved in the time we had.

Needless to say I’m having to accept that my baseline is shattered and it might be a bit longer than usual before I can be writing again.

Nothing good comes from pushing our bodies past what they can do, so I’m focusing on rest and finishing this move.

Honestly I wish there was secure and affordable housing for disabled people for life. Being forced to move when you can’t even get out of bed is one of the most stressful things you can be put through … and it Happens to way too many of us.

I fully plan to write an article on housing instability and discrimination against disabled people once I’m back to baseline !

In the meantime I need suggestions for cheap but safe online retailers where I can replace clothes. Due to a severe mold problem in old apartment almost everything has to be tossed. With my severe MCAS I can’t wear a lot of fabrics so if anyone knows of a unicorn store please let me know (my go to Canadian brand has become too expensive for me)

this piece reminds me of our own senior park during the beginning of COVID. we all got a letter from property management giving us a coercive choice: either pay rent (we all own our homes yet pay rent on the land it sits on) at an exorbitant price or agree on 25yr lease terms.

we olds mostly live on fixed incomes so they had us by the…plus we were so scared at rage beginning of the pandemic knowing our generation had a higher rate of death. we got together & emailed our local newspaper bringing a photographer/reporter crew to interview us.

our story ran on the front page of our local newspaper bringing an end to this coercive control by the property management company.

ableism for sure played a part in this but we olds were badass organizers having no legal representation or organizing background.

Anarchists in the Tenant Movement #2 - Salt Lake City

This is the second installment of our Anarchists in the Tenant Movement series. You can find the first installment here. The interview below was conducted with an organizer named Espy, involved in building a tenant organization in the western Salt Lake Valley. Like our other series Anarchists in the Labor Movement, this series presents insights and perspectives […]

Trying to move into a new apartment while mostly bedbound is nearly impossible. I would not be doing it if I had any other choice.

Baseline is shattered.

Budget is decimated from all the surprise expenses, many of which are related to my poor health.

It’s another example of the “crip tax” that we don’t talk about enough.

I haven’t been able to write so my newsletter has been sitting untouched and breaking my heart

I can barely keep up with messages and emails

I sincerely hope this setback is temporary and once I’m safely housed my writing and cognitive function return… but this is the reality when chronically ill

Every setback can be permanent.

Your baseline is not guaranteed.

You must guard it at all costs and protect what’s left of your health.

Take breaks. Set boundaries. Listen to your body.

It’s so hard to do, but it’s also incredibly necessary.

UCSF Reaches $300K Settlement Over Disability Accommodation Dispute

What does UCSF do? Train medical professionals. So imagine what kind of medical professional a systemically ableist institution trains.

"The complaint, originally filed in 2022, alleged that UCSF repeatedly failed to meaningfully engage with the employee regarding requests to work remotely despite documentation from a doctor supporting the accommodation.

According to CRD, the employee was at one point involuntarily placed on medical leave and required to continue commuting to work in pain for an extended period.

...
The complaint further alleged that the employee could have continued performing the job remotely because the department was already operating virtually at the time"

UCSF Reaches $300K Settlement over Disability Accommodation Dispute - Davis Vanguard

I made this to eventually turn into a patch, once I find the best local supplier, so that I could sew it onto my jacket. For now, there are stickers available on my shop.
Based on the triangle used by the Nazis to identify people like me. It'll be nice to be able to let people know who I really am, even when I can't help but wear the mask. I hope you stick 'em everywhere!

WTF is wrong with these people? This is #ableism in its purist form.

Past-tensing the pandemic and then only focusing on "state control and resistance to it" is such a fuck up historic revisionism, that i have been screaming at the top of my lungs for the past twenty minutes (metaphorically speaking).

And all this framed in an abolitionist angle.
