I recently broke my custom filament sensor mount while changing the filament.

I took the opportunity to refine it further, making it more sturdy.

The model is designed for the Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro 3D printer, and allows using both spools of filament. Yes, the original one did not. 🤷‍♂️

@FreeCAD I have completed my outdoor sensor enclosure.

I learned that creating a smooth surface from an FDM print is not easy. I sanded and coated with acrylic paint at least five times, and there is still some surface structure from the printing process left.

Hey @FreeCAD, I have continued my light saber project.

In theory, this structure should hold a PCB with three LEDs to illuminate the blade from inside the hilt.

More good news! Another government is freeing itself from tech giants and vendor lock-in. The Danish Ministry of Digitalisation is dropping Microsoft Office/365 and moving to #LibreOffice, to get back control: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2025/07/08/danish-ministry-switching-from-microsoft-office-365-to-libreoffice/ #foss #OpenSource #freesoftware

@FreeCAD I have finally printed the blade for my light saber in transparent PLA. I have started optimizing the hilt for printing as well. I have also started on the electronics for illumination but it will take some more free time to complete the project.

@tinx Did you just sand it down? I learned that spraying it with automotive filler spray and then sanding gives near-perfect result and eliminates the FDM layer lines. The stuff fills the gaps and sands down faster than the plastic.
@apzpins thanks for the tip!
I was going to look for some kind of primer for my next project. I think there are epoxi primers specifically marketed for that purpose. But I naïvely expected the spray paint to fill the gaps after one to three layers.

@tinx A car painter guy tipped me off about that stuff and it seems to do what it promises.

Prints turned out to be more difficult to paint than I had originally anticipated. Especially spray paints seem to react very badly to the layers but the filler seems to somehow dig its way in there.

@apzpins @tinx Yes, the filler spray is key to a better paint job. It is important to apply the primer coat a couple of times, allowing it to dry thoroughly between each application by lightly sanding to ensure a smooth and even surface for the paint. In my experience, this process significantly improves the overall quality of the paintwork.
@tinx @FreeCAD you can also smooth surfaces (depending on Material used) relatively nicely to a shining finish using Acetone vapors

@DJGummikuh thanks! I was kinda aware of that but I didn't like to meddle with chemicals 😵‍💫

Does that work well with PETG in your experience?

@tinx unfortunately no. However, if your printer supports it (enclosure recommended, 100C bed required) I woule suggest for outdoor parts to switch to ASA, especially when you have direct sunlight
