The Master and Margarita

The only thing wrong with this picture is that she needs a festive beverage in her hand. The cat is fine. The cat is ruminating, as cats are wont to do.

This is interesting: "The Celestial Omnibus" short story by E.M. Forster (1912).

https://monadnock.net/forster/omnibus.html

It really reminds me, in theme, tone, and treatment, of stories by Neil Gaiman, which is not something I expected from Forster (but of course, I'm absolutely no expert on Forster, though I've read several of his books).

Anyway, I enjoyed it, and it is interesting to wonder: if Gaiman were writing 100+ years ago, what would it look / sound like?

Searching a bit I see it's been adapted as a play at least once. (https://www.theatre22.org/)

I think I will just lie down here for a while.

A gorgeous series of nighttime photos of lavender fields by Samir Belhamra. "Taken in Valensole in Southern France, we see beautifully even rows of lavender, richly purple against a starry night sky."

Stunning French Lavender Fields At Night - Moss and Fog

Self-taught photographer Samir Belhamra show his skill in these beautiful and inspiring photos of lavender fields at night.

Moss and Fog - Beauty, design, and visual inspiration, every day.

Okay, this is sort of useful. Especially for pints, which I can never remember. But if any recipe ever calls for 1/16 of a cup of anything, I'm going to throw it in the fire. I mean, maybe a cocktail? But that should use milliliters.

Also, I'm not saying I would ever use 5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon of something just to avoid cleaning my 1/3 cup measure after using oil when I realize I next have to measure flour, but I'm not saying I wouldn't NOT not do that.

The dress that gave hope after the horror of the Holocaust

CURIOUS ARTS

Something rather wonderful for writers who need to source early 19th Century info, artists and handicrafters who want to replicate old techniques, or people who just love trawling through antique and vintage trivia (me!):

A SELECT COLLECTION OF VALUABLE AND CURIOUS ARTS AND INTERESTING EXPERIMENTS

https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/38067/pg38067-images.html

All sorts of just fascinating stuff in this 1826 edition, mostly practical ("To dye silk a brilliant gold colour"; "To make elastic varnish for umbrellas"), but also including whimsical items such as "Sympathetic inks for secret correspondence" and fun parlor tricks ("To light a candle by application of ice").

The appendix alone is a treasure trove, with a list of items / ingredients used in the book, including explanations of those items, and their prices.

whoa! I almost forgot #Fensterfreitag! I don't have time to trawl through my files or spend much time with research or writing, so I'll just share this cute online jigsaw puzzle I just finished. It's a pretty relaxing one, and features both picturesque window and bonus felinity. (No sign-up etc. necessary.)

I may not be cheerful right now, but by god, my food will be!

Made confetti couscous tonight to go with grilled salmon. Yummy.

My recipe:

Instant couscous: 1-1.5 cups, prepare as directed.

Raw veg chopped into small bits: carrot, red bell pepper, zucchini, spring onion -- white and green parts.

(You decide the amounts. This time, I used 1 med. carrot, 1 med. zucchini, 1 sm. spring onion, 1 sm. red bell pepper.)

A handful or two directly from the freezer: small frozen green peas

Complementary stuff: raisins, dried cranberries, chopped almonds, to taste

Dressing: juice of one orange, equal amount of olive oil, salt and pepper. Add some lemon juice if too sweet. Use as much as needed, to taste, or to have the couscous reasonably moist (agreeable to the tongue, basically. Your tongueage may vary)

In my experience, even people who usually rebel against raisins in non-desserts end up liking them in this.

The First Meme of the 20th Century?

For #WeirdWednesday, "Le Cochon Danseur" (The Dancing Pig), is a bizarre little silent film short from 1907 that knowyourmeme.com has called "the first meme of the 20th century."

The Silentology blog has a great investigation of the film's origins and history.
