Grace Kelly’s 1956 Wedding Dress: Design, Legacy, and Influence

Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, worn during her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco on April 19, 1956, remains one of the most iconic bridal gowns of the 20th century. Designed by Helen Rose of MGM, the dress featured a high-necked, long-sleeved fitted bodice and a full skirt, inspired by costumes in the MGM archives, particularly from the film Invitation. Made with luxurious materials including silk taffeta, silk net, peau de soie, tulle, and 125-year-old Brussels rose point lace, the ensemble also included a bejeweled Juliet cap, a 90-yard tulle veil, kid gloves, and a lace- and pearl-encrusted prayer book. The civil ceremony the day before was attended by 80 guests from 24 nations, and Kelly wore a pale pink taffeta dress covered with cream-colored Alençon lace. The wedding gown has influenced many modern designs, including those of Catherine Middleton, Australian model Miranda Kerr, and Paris Hilton. The Philadelphia Museum of Art displayed the dress on its 50th anniversary, calling it one of the museum’s most popular exhibits.
