Tech people were initially, from 2000 to 2004, fairly good-natured and relaxed. It helped that the nerds were suddenly considered cool. In 2008, with the banking crash, the unemployed finance types came to Silicon Valley and whipped the companies into shape… cementing the already latent materialistic ultra-positivism. Since then, the rule has been: “Everything is measurable. What is not measurable is not real.” Human sciences are nonsense. Paradoxically, though, the VC elite recently likes to borrow from intellectuals, you'll meet Nietzsche, Smith, and even Russell—but in a completely haphazard, I was googling for quotes kind of way. They quote philosophy to sound smart but at the same time they assume that beauty, friendship, reason and intellect, trust and wisdom, goodness and evil are not real beyond their materially measurable effects. Music is just moving air. Literature is merely a collection of signs that instill useless illusions. What blue do we pick? Let's measure 54 shades of blue and pick the most clicked one. Happiness is nothing more than the right accumulation of electrical currents in the brain. And with that they believe to have acquired a deeper crasser insight into reality. And then these fools take their financial success as cosmic proof of their brazen, soulless, and desolate worldview. Their obsession with measurability has been completely cemented by wealth and power. If you have worked with some of those types you also know: Their unconditional belief in measurability is also their weakness. When a market crash comes and user numbers decline, their worldview collapses. These fools believe so much in numbers that a financial crash might in fact not be the worst thing. | 14 comments on LinkedIn
