My first #postmarketos port, the AYN Thor :D
did this all while under my blanket (I did stay up until 7-8am throughout the night multiple times though 😭).
All the work was done on a Snapdragon X Elite laptop, no x64 was used in the creation of this port >:3
It was super fun too! If you're determined enough, pmbootstrap offers really good tooling for porting any sort of android device. I really recommend porting one of your own devices it's really fun and a great learning experience. The wiki gives alot of useful information on how to port stuff and there are a ton of helpful people in the postmarketos matrix and IRC chat (thx btw)
This port is still a little rough around the edges and kind of hacky but its awesome how quickly you can get something up and running, i only got this in the mail a couple days ago :)
What are you waiting for? Go make all your devices run mobile linux already!!!!!!

A comic that I will think about every day for the rest of my life, probably.

(Sauce: https://analognowhere.com/_/ogmxha/ )

A month of reverse-engineering of a 42-year-old operating system just to display anime girls in it. Trust me, it was all worth it.

Still Work In Progress, but the current version is https://git.sr.ht/~nkali/vision-homebrew-test-app - requires make, Python, nasm, gcc-ia16 and mtools :)

I am writing a book

Someone on the Steam subreddit was asking for Valve to make a #SteamOS phone (seeing how the new VR headset is Arm but also playes x86 steam games). And I thought "Hey, I've already got #PostmarketOS on a phone. We know Valve is using some 'FEX' library. How hard could it be?"

As it turned out, remarkably easy. (Though, it helps that someone already wrote a guide for it: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Steam )

Pretty sure it's a YMMV situation, but my milage was pretty good.

#FEX_Emu

ocaml has 13k line vibe-coded, vibe reviewed PR dumped on it. it rehashes so much GPL code that t regurgitated the author of the library it ripped off's copyright.

I am writing a book

@vowe This needs to be an actual book.

I'm serious.

@eonity @vowe
Too bad the instructions would be outdated by the next update 😅.

@vowe

Installing Linux would do the trick also. ;)

@_RyekDarkener_ @vowe I have seen linux users using a browser to access copilot.
(or using VScode).

In fact, i'm one of these users.

@lobingera @vowe

Well, ... ;)
If the product is used in your production environment, there is no easy way to get rid of it.
Nevertheless, digital slavery is a choice, not a law of nature.

@_RyekDarkener_ @vowe I'm a test user for some tools.
@vowe huh, I think I'd be interested in a copy
@vowe Preordering as soon as you tell me which Microsoft Copilot this disables.
@vowe Next book on that journey is already written ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@sebi @vowe a lot of people have to use Microsoft. Like at a job.
@Jennifer People still have free time and maybe more freedom without disabling copilot every other day on there private machine ;)
@Jennifer @sebi @vowe Luckily you don't typically admin your workstation - And if they leave copilot enabled they're just asking for the consequences at that point.
@krutonium @sebi @vowe the last corporate job I had wouldn't turn it off, I think they said doing that would affect some network stuff or Teams or something, I can't remember exactly. I refuse to use Microsoft for my personal laptop now!
@vowe
1. Quit Microsoft
2. Profit
@vowe Was macht das Copilot? Ich habs auf der Arbeit gesehen, aber nicht benutzt.
@Hammerwell
Copilot ist ein AI Tool, das Programmierer*innen helfen soll, was dann bei der Überprüfung und Bereinigung des (fehlerhaften) Codes mehr Zeit braucht als beim Erstellen eingespart wird.
@vowe
@Firestarter_OL @vowe Danke. Ein Verschlimmbesserungstool also.
@vowe für Notepad gibt es jetzt einen GPO-Satz, der ausschließlich dazu dient, Copilot zu deaktivieren. Die Richtlinie funktioniert nicht
@vowe I miss those books (not e) though.
@vowe
I note the publisher will be "Oh'Really"
@vowe
Go by the pen name of Michael End…
@vowe Yep, doing my part at home by uninstalling Windows on my children's machines. We can now run Roblox on Linux, so no need for the nonsense.
@vowe I would have gone for an irritating insect, perhaps a horsefly or a mosquito.
The ram should have 5 legs.
@vowe As Linux is not an option at work, I do need that - urgently…

@ralf
Can I ask why it is not an option? Company policy is one thing, but you are implying it is another reason. And I often find those other reasons are just because people haven't found the right solution more than it doesn't exist.

@vowe

@nikatjef @ralf @vowe where is the implication that it's not company policy? I didn't catch that part of the message
@raphaelmorgan
Usually when it is company policy they will say something like "At our company Linux is not an option" or "Our company policy does not allow Linux" or some variant of that. When they say it without indicating that it is company policy, it usually means they have a specific app that they need and don't think they can find something compatible.
@ralf @vowe
@nikatjef @ralf @vowe do you have any sort of data to back this up, or is this just an assumption you're making? Humans are a very diverse species, I'm willing to bet there are some people who just didn't feel their specific reason was relevant but it still was something along the lines of "it's company policy"

@raphaelmorgan
Just experience over the past 30+ years.

Many times, if it was company policy they would say it was company policy. If it wasn't company policy, but a specific app instead, they would say it was because of an package they needed.
@ralf @vowe

@nikatjef @raphaelmorgan @vowe It is company policy: either Windows or a Mac. As Mac doesn’t come with Intel processors anymore and I (still) need an Intel/AMD processor for a bunch of native code, I‘m bound to Windows on Intel/AMD.
@ralf @nikatjef @vowe now to see if this data point makes its way into the "30+ years of experience" or gets conveniently forgotten 🤔
@vowe
How many revisions per month?
@vowe Vorbestellungslink wo?
@vowe Appropriate (English) expression: "the best way to quit is to never start".
Always consider: will I 'own' this product, or will the provider own me?

@dn It's not like anyone *chooses* to start using Copilot. You just get to work one morning, login as usual, and there it is making "helpful" suggestions at you.

You turn it off but next week it pops up in a new place.

I swear I'd turned it off everywhere but this week I was working from home using the web mail app and sure enough, there it was again!

I'm not sure a book is useful for keeping on top of it. Maybe an RSS feed that can post regular updates of which obscure corner of the settings you need to hunt through *today*.

@vowe

@zeborah @vowe MSFT is not one of my beneficiaries. Regret am unable to offer advice - although, do you think Co-Pilot might know?
Had to update a Win11 m/c and was slightly taken-aback to be told my next tea-break should last 45-minutes ("do not turn off" aka do not expect to use YOUR PC...).
I think the time I've spent keeping my Linux system (manually) up-to-date for the last couple of years combined, would be close to 45-mins (and am recalling only one reboot!)

@dn I wasn't asking for advice. I was attempting to humorously push back on your implication that all Copilot problems could be solved if individuals made better (meaning all Linux all the time) life choices.

I love my Linux computer too (though it certainly has rebooted several times in the last year alone for updates but whatever) but sadly I need to pay the bills, which means I need a job, and my workplace requires us to use Windows, which in turn keeps shoving Copilot down our throats.

Please just let people rant about things occasionally without turning it into a FOSS/Linux Evangelism Moment(TM) every time, because spoiler alert, life is more complicated than that.

@zeborah More a case of agreeing with you - MSFT need to improve. User Experience (and choice) would be a great first step!
@vowe @buxuyaojieguo This is going to be one those books with lots of editions as we play whack-a-mole here
@vowe I just got a new Android phone, and I had to uninstall the Copilot app TWICE for some reason. Probably some Play Store update BS. Hopefully it stays uninstalled, but given Google's and Microsoft's track record on consent, I'm not betting on it. Can't wait for a Murena /e/OS ROM to become available for my phone.
@vowe that cover is impeccable
@vowe Congrats on winning the infinite job security game.
@vowe ha ha fantastic

@vowe My manuscript:

All Micro$oft products are viruses. Don't use them.

Use something else. There are reasonable user-friendly alternatives for every one of their products that matters.

@vowe Let me know when it's out.

@vowe my side hustle is obsessively checking every product i use and account i have, after every update, to see what new sort of data-harvest has been enabled or opted into and if it's possible to turn it off.

and by side hustle, i mean something i feel obligated to do, to avoid a persistent feeling of actual dread.

@vowe an ourobouros on the cover would have been fitting
Can you deliver by Christmas? @fallingrock may want this.
@vowe Can we also have a Firefox edition? Please? Or at least an appendix? 😁
