This beauty is one of my favourite Grandfather oaks, and perfect for #ThickTrunkTuesday — he can be found at Folly Farm Centre, near Stowey in Somerset if you want to visit. I took this just after sunrise on a frosty January morning in 2020, before the world changed.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) averaged about 419 ppm in December 2022

GML conducts research on greenhouse gas and carbon cycle feedbacks, changes in aerosols, and surface radiation, and recovery of stratospheric ozone.

One issue with using methods like AlphaFold or RoseTTAFold for design is that they were trained to model P(structure|sequence). They were only trained on valid sequences. So if you use AF for design, you are likely to find adversarial sequences that trick the model. So you need a way to model the validity of the sequence or the P(sequence). Enter protein language models! (1/5)

#Actin cytoskeleton and complex cell architecture in an Asgard archaeon https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05550-y

A complex actin-based #cytoskeleton predated the emergence of the first #eukaryotes and was a crucial feature in the evolution of the #AsgardArchaea phylum by scaffolding elaborate cellular structures.

Shedding light On The Origin Of Complex Life Forms - Astrobiology

How did the complex organisms on Earth arise? This is one of the big open questions in biology.

If NIF really is going to announce net energy gain from #fusion, that’s a huge deal! I interviewed Tammy Ma about this possibility a few years ago and she said that reaching this goal would be “a little like landing on the moon” https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/nuclear-fusion-lawrence-livermore-laboratory-b2243247.html #fusionenergy This is inertial fusion and still a very long way from becoming a working power plant. But it’s still super exciting!
US scientists achieve ‘holy grail’ net gain nuclear fusion reaction: report

Nuclear fusion could be key tool to stave off climate crisis

The Independent

I’m looking for some *really big* (ideally millions of rows) biological datasets for a “Data Science in Biology” course.

Ideally they should be:

* archived with a DOI
* have an associated paper or two, with some cool questions
* be messy observational data, or collated across many studies

If you have any pointers, I’d be extremely grateful! Please boost!
