Today I walked from Dunster (UK, Somerset) up to Bat's castle - the remnants of an iron age hillfort. Not sure if it's been excavated, but the stone rampart and ditches are clearly visible. The walk I did was about 7km, with 210m of elevation which was quite tough, but the view from the top is amazing - the Bristol Channel on one side, and hills and valleys on the other. #exmoornationalpark #somerset #hillforts #ironage

Mind if I have a drink?

I was so busy trying to get the focus right that I never noticed the less-spotted tripe-hound has pottered into the water for a drink. Still as today is apparently National Puppy Day seems appropriate.

Larvae (or triungulins) of Violet Oil Beetle (Meloe violaceus) on the outskirts of #Bath #Somerset #UK. These hang about on flowers and grab hold of the hairs of visiting solitary bees, which carry them to their nests, where they feed on the bee larvae and the stashed pollen. Oil beetles do not seriously affect bee populations - the presence of parasites and parasitoids like oil beetles is indicative of a healthy, functioning ecosystem

Common Toothwort (Lathraea squamaria), a parasitic plant that produces no chlorophyll - instead, it derives all its nutrients from the roots of the host tree. These were growing under a willow in Newton St Loe, near #Bath #Somerset #UK
