African women have shaped history with extraordinary resilience and leadership. From ancient matrilineal societies and warrior queens to modern-day leaders in global organizations, their contributions are immense yet often overlooked.

In Ghana, women have played essential roles throughout history—from the Ashanti queen mothers who influenced political decisions to contemporary leaders advancing gender equality and entrepreneurship. Ghanaian women continue to break barriers in business, education, and governance, driving change at local and national levels.

Despite challenges like gender-based violence, health disparities, and economic barriers, African women continue to lead progress in politics, entrepreneurship, and peacebuilding. African women head major international bodies such as Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at the WTO, Louise Mushikiwabo at the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, and Winnie Byanyima at UNAIDS. Countries like Namibia and South Africa rank among the top worldwide for gender parity in labor market outcomes.
