I study social movements, especially US Black movement in the 1990s and 2000s. I also do research and advocacy on racial disparities in the criminal legal system.

I currently have two Mastodon accounts but will be moving over to sciences.social as soon as I get the nerve to try following the instructions. It will be a while before I am trying to do much on either site. Mostly just getting set up in case needed.

I don't know how useful this will be, but I've compiled a quick start guide, with lots of screenshots, aimed at #humanities #academics who are #NewToMastodon, trying to cover some of the things I see people most frequently getting stuck on in some less technical language than existing documentation.

I've put it on #HumanitiesCommons open for edits and comments so that other folks can help fill out things like useful hashtags.

Moving right along. I thought I'd try to move myself to science.social as a less busy and more focused server, but I managed somehow to mess up the email addresses and passwords. Great, now I've locked myself out of the other account.
I really hope we can foster an #academicmastodon community as vibrant as the one we had on Twitter. Staying on the other platform for academic conversations less sustainable by the day.
I am moving to a paid instance at masto.host @cameron Please follow me there! I will do an account transfer in a few days.

US friends - if you're worried about the election Tuesday, the most effective thing YOU can do (besides voting yourself) is to talk to potential voters, in person if possible, or else by phone. Find a place to volunteer at http://swingleft.org, or your favorite local candidate.

If you can't do in person, here's a good PA phone option: https://www.mobilize.us/seedthevote/event/496730/?force_banner=true&share_context=event_details&share_medium=copy_link

Reposting this on the new instance --

An #introduction:

I'm Alex Hanna, the Director of Research for the Distributed #AI Research Institute. I'm a #sociology PhD who has been studying #tech and society for over 10 years. I'm involved in #labor and #trans organizing, and am currently Chair of Sociologists for Trans Justice. I sometimes teach at Cal #Berkeley. The rest of my free time goes to #RollerDerby -- I skate, announce, and sometimes referee with Bay Area Derby in #Oakland.

Having new posts roll past me too fast to read them is not an improvement.
In my non-academic life, I'm discovering that a co-congregant who is a former pastor thinks the only way to teach others about the threat of Christian nationalism is a multi-month study of a book criticizing its theology. I'm pushing articles about the sociology of it. Talk about cultural conflict.
This site isn't going to work without a lot more tutorials about how to make it work. I suspect algorithms do have a role to play. So far as I can tell, the high-traffic twitteristas have not moved. Other notes: (1) So far I see only one Black academic I know on here. (2) Is this a good place for frivolous posts? (3) the sub-forums (whatever subgroup you randomly signed up for) are not all that well organized.
