#openaccess #nature publication on #energy transition #metals #mining and #rural and #Indigenous livelihoods

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41893-022-00994-6

This, I think, must be our central question: does mining for #climate undermine climate #resilience?

And relatedly: what guarantees are there that assure that the material mined in the name of climate will actually go to #renewable energy technology?

Energy transition minerals and their intersection with land-connected peoples - Nature Sustainability

Transitioning the global energy system to renewables will likely expand energy transition minerals and metals (ETMs) projects to sensitive territories. Across 5,097 projects globally, greater than half of the ETM resource base appears to be located on or near the lands of Indigenous and peasant peoples whose rights to consultation are embedded in United Nations declarations.

Call for Contributions: Volume 31, Issue 2&3: Decolonising Knowledge and Practice - Gender and Development

The history of knowledge production and dissemination cannot be understood outside of the history of colonialism, patriarchy and capitalism that in turn underpin current neoliberal frameworks and institutions. Knowledge production is a process that entails power and is historically full of examples of colonial extraction and appropriation of knowledge systems from indigenous communities Furthermore, in the current global political context, which ... All week, university students in the UK, US, and Canada will be striking with Fossil Free Research -- they're asking their universities to stop taking fossil fuel research money. Why? It materially shapes #climate policies and solutions.
A study out last week showed that empirically: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-022-01521-3.epdf?sharing_token=q6u3o3XLL_ziqLal_zfJk9RgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0PFHvJIHvJ_ACmLOp1FbbeYnNHRPkNNIlf-VIv3NozoIW-hh9MJFshD8VY-5P44f-8waRIQIFNAUe1byovgUh9P7aZRAS9XKJsSek7v-xl4U3z3uvq3pL4K5CqeatADXxI%3D

Been looking at how fossil fuel $ work on campuses for a while myself and tried to round it all up in this #podcast episode https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/universities-are-starting-to-say-no-to-fossil-fuel-funding/id1439735906?i=1000582993632

Favourability towards natural gas relates to funding source of university energy centres - Nature Climate Change

University-based energy centres play an important role in climate discourse but many are funded by fossil fuel businesses. This study shows that fossil-fuel-funded centres express more positive sentiment towards natural gas, compared to renewable energy, than those not funded by the fossil industry.
