OPUS 4 | Proceedings of STS-hub.de 2023: Circulations : Towards encounters amongst STS scholars in Germany

Science and Technology Studies in Germany has several decades of history. At the same time, STS has been discussed in a range of disciplinary niches; in the 2010s increasingly STS scholars called for connecting the German landscape of STS scholars. The STS-hub 2023 served this purpose, performing a conference space that served scholars' needs to meet without harshly disciplining their mode of doing STS. The Hub was to allow scholars to meet colleagues, interact and leave, without having to threaten any of the already existing STS associations, groups and networks operating within Germany. This publication collects selected panel reports and offers a book of abstracts, both serving to document the state of STS in Germany in the early 2020s

Federated Fair Trade Energy: Speculative Fabulation for a Planet with Limits

What happens to permacomputing when electricity grids shift to decentralised green energy, and local communities and municipalities have increased governance over this vital public service? Electricity and computational networks are more than just separate systems that plug together. Shifts to renewable energy generation in the grid are impacting computational systems, and computational demands on electrical power are impacting the electricity grid; one infrastructure limits the other. Permacomputing research tends to focus on 'off-grid' or 'behind-the-meter' energy. This sacrifices some of the social justice benefits that the public electricity grid, managed and regulated for universal service, was designed to provide. Our paper uses empirically-grounded 'speculative fabulation' to identify research opportunities in permacomputing that open up when energy systems are federated across communities. The speculative fabulation takes the form of an interview between the energy manager of a future energy island in the North Sea and a permacomputing podcaster. This allows us to conceive of computing-grid integration in tractable social and ecological terms, and introduce a notion of 'fair trade energy'.

Models are not neutral summaries of reality.

They are cuts into continuity: selective procedures that make part of an ongoing process recognizable, recordable, transmissible, or actionable.

The question is not whether we cut. We have to cut to perceive, remember, govern, and act.

The question is: who cuts, by what frame, and with what consequence?

Models, Meaning, and Continuity: A Three-Part Essay Cycle on Models, Metaphor, and Story

This essay cycle argues that human meaning is stabilized through models: selective cuts into ongoing continuity that make experience recognizable, recordable, transmissible, and actionable. The first essay defines the anatomy of such cuts and proposes governance principles for consequential records and classifications. The second essay explains metaphor as a mechanism by which models move across domains. The third essay treats parables, archetype-spaces, and durable story-patterns as temporal models that preserve meaning across time. Together, the essays offer a practical account of how meaning forms, travels, survives, and is reconstructed by different listeners. This work is part of a broader project on models, symbolic meaning, weak-signal interpretation, and AI architecture.
