FOSS enthusiast.

I've worked in tech a long time.

Now I also teach & tutor.

@debian

I'd love to see a pledge from Debian to keep AI out of develepont.

Is that something we can consider?

In most ways, it seems like the antithesis of Debian to hand it over to robots.

At least for the foreseeable future.

This notion that we need to ask what teachers are able to DO with their time (not just say "let's shave time off teaching") is such a crystal clear point and one that is resonating across multiple worlds, from technology teams through classrooms, it doesn't surprise me at all as someone who's been a behavioral scientist in BOTH domains. "time savings" is always the bullshit way to talk about interventions

Danish citizens to ‘own their own faces’ to prevent deepfakes - sh.itjust.works

>Denmark plans to become the first country in the world to give its citizens copyright over their faces and voices in an effort to clamp down on “deepfakes” — videos, audio clips and images that are digitally doctored to spread false information.

🚨 We're still in need of more #snowflake extensions to help keep Iranians connected during this critical time.

If you're able, please consider running a Tor Snowflake proxy. This simple and safe action can make a significant difference in ensuring Iranians stay online. #KeepItOn

🇩🇰 Minister is phasing out Microsoft in the Ministry of Digitalization

「 Digitalization Minister Caroline Stage will begin phasing out Microsoft from her ministry starting next month. The plan is for about half of the employees to start working with computers running a version of #Linux instead of Windows and using #LibreOffice instead of Office 365 over the summer. If all goes as expected, the entire ministry will be free from Microsoft by autumn 」

For the first time, sovereignty is becoming a priority in the joint digitalization strategy of the government, municipalities, and regions.

@torproject Does the deployment of more snowflakes do much to improve the transport's censorship resistance or is it just a matter of throughput?
Correct me if this is wrong but from what i know snowflake connections require domain-fronted connections to one of the few centralized broker servers to bootstrap

@soop @torproject IIRC, while the Snowflake proxy itself connects to the central bridge registry servers usage of it does not require that.

The entire purpose of Snowflake is to make Tor usage even harder to detect by disguising it as a WebRTC connection - which, to a government / organization attempting to block Tor, makes it blend in with normal VoIP / Video call traffic.

@torproject hey dear, how do you see orbot "altruistic mode"? does it fit the purpose?

@diorama @torproject

yep, this does exact same thing!

Can I help if the machines I use are subject to a security policy which only allows software to be installed from the default Ubuntu and Debian repositories?
@kasperd@westergaard.social @torproject yes, you can help without installing anything by going to https://embed-snowflake.torproject.org and keeping the tab open
Snowflake

I forgot to mention that the machine I wanted to do this on is running headless and doesn’t have much spare RAM or disk space.

@kasperd

You can build a standalone proxy from source and/or run it as docker container (the latest official image is quite old (the last time I checked it) which is why I build mine from source in a container).

@torproject

@torproject kept mine on all day. hope it helped!
@torproject I'm curious.
Iran cut off connections with only few exemptions (ICMP in select datacentres, DNS, mobile roaming, satellite), and WebRTC is not among any. In what way is Snowflake going to help? Or the intensity varies between Iranian provinces, and some of them allows WebRTC traffic?
@lumiere @torproject since yesterday the Iranian gov is restoring the internet access in the country. Right now, the main limitation of how many users can use snowflake is the amount of proxies available.
@torproject I have definitely seen a usage spike over the last few days. It’s not difficult to spin up / use the extension and there is no noticable difference to, for example, my connection, for anyone on the fence about helping
@torproject Its running in #podman, there seems to be a lot more activity compared to just having it open in a browser tab. Requested a gitlab account to improve the Dockerfile but not response so far... [Edit: Account activated, thanks!]
