A significant portion of Australia's workforce operates under either fixed-term or casual contracts. Our newest research in Australia aimed to evaluate the effect of these employment forms on starting a family.

We find:
- Men are less likely to have their first child when employed in fixed-term/casual contracts

- The impact of fixed-term contracts is nearly TWICE as strong as that of casual employment.

Our latest work reveals that:

• Victoria's protracted lockdown negatively impacted older women’s and less educated fertility plans.

Lesson? Policy responses to future pandemics should not be limited to immediate health and economic impacts.
