Trump used it for campaign appearances.
Trump once called for Russia to illegally release Hillary’s emails. I call for America to legally release the full Epstein files.
Never obsolete? That is a bold statement computer, from the 2000s. 🫣

Over 70 arrested in UK at protests in support of banned Palestine Action group

More than 70 people were arrested Saturday at protests over the use of anti-terror laws to ban activist group Palestine Action following a break-in and vandalism at a Royal Air Force base. In London, it was the second straight week protesters gathered to support the pro-Palestinian group.

"Memory isn't scarce anymore" for as long as it is expensive, it will be scarce. If you're rich, you don't get to define what is scarce or not, since what isn't scarce for you might be for someone else

yes that includes storage. Not everyone is able to spend 100€ on a hard drive, and that's in well off countries.

Picked some cherry tomatoes from the community garden.

Thinking of what Thich Nhat Hahn said about a flower. You can see the sunlight, the soil, the cloud, the insects - all within this cherry tomato. You can see the people and the librarians that maintain the seed library from which the seeds came from and the harvested seeds will go back to. You can see the folks that will eat it and live another day. You can see the people that those folks can help by their actions after being fueled by these tomatoes.

It's a small thing. And empty thing. A thing able to be filled.

A wonderful thing.

Bill McKibben, environmentalist, author, and journalist, writes in this well-researched and inspiring article -

"In the past 2 years, with surprisingly little notice, renewable energy has suddenly become the obvious, mainstream, cost-efficient choice around the world. Against all the big bad things happening on the planet (and despite all the best efforts of the Republican-led Congress in recent weeks), this is a very big and hopeful thing ..."

4.6 Billion Years On, the Sun Is Having a Moment

In the past two years, without much notice, solar power has begun to truly transform the world’s energy system, Bill McKibben writes.

You don't see toys like this around anymore. The Atomic Energy Lab set was available from 1951 to 1952 and sold for a whopping $50.

"The set came with four types of uranium ore, a beta-alpha source, a pure beta source, a gamma source, a spinthariscope, a cloud chamber, an electroscope, a geiger counter, and a manual."

@Natasha_Jay *Ink Spots intensifies*
@Natasha_Jay

You’d likely get bombed by the USA for having one of those now.

@inpc
'The toy was discontinued in 1951, with Gilbert’s company citing “government restrictions” and the “difficulty of obtaining materials"'

So ... well... quite! 🤣

@Natasha_Jay @inpc And obviously it was all perfectly safe.... 🤭🤔😄😅😂🤣
@inpc @Natasha_Jay Netanyahu is drawing the bomb cartoon as we speak
@inpc @Natasha_Jay there is one on display in German Museum in Munich…
@inpc @Natasha_Jay we had a lot of science toys- real microscopes, transparent models of humans and animals that showed all the organs inside, preparing to be astronaut/scientists
@Natasha_Jay I had some kits and books from this series... not this exact one, I don't think. Handed down from my grandparents etc.

@Natasha_Jay fallout new Vegas / fallout 4 absolutely nail this vibe.

The kit itself is unimaginable today though lol

@Natasha_Jay
Toys nowadays ain't what they used to be.(In cracking grandpa voice)

@Natasha_Jay

I wish I could fund this for @TechConnectify 😍

@Natasha_Jay

the risk from the uranium-238 in Gilbert’s U-238 Atomic Energy Lab was minimal, about the equivalent to a day’s UV exposure from the sun. And the kit had the beneficial effect of teaching that radioactivity is a naturally occurring phenomena. Bananas are mildly radioactive, after all, as are Brazil nuts and lima beans. somehow i feel like fireworks are more dangerous than this

@Natasha_Jay from the ieee article, which is linked in the linked article
@piku @Natasha_Jay I'd add that watching TikTok is probably more dangerous.
@piku How many kids promptly went out to the kitchen with their geiger counter to test the bananas? @Natasha_Jay
@piku @Natasha_Jay interestingly coal plants and concrete manufacturers have a much higher ambient radiation level than atomic power plants. Not saying we should all soak up gamma rays willy nilly, but the zero tolerance principle keeps atomic energy very expensive. At 70,000 times the energy density of coal, it should be 100% legal for each of us to have a 1g reactor. Could power our homes for decades.

@Natasha_Jay
Probably not "that" dangerous.
Kids, just try not to eat the uranium.

Cloud chambers are actually pretty cool to play with if you get them working properly.

@electric_gumball you can make one pretty easily too… and. IIRC, all you need is a little dry ice, a little rubbing alcohol , a glass bowl, and a banana or a smoke detector PC board to see it in action.
@Natasha_Jay LuckyPennyShop has to review this if he hasn’t already!

@Natasha_Jay @quixoticgeek “Why are these sources so large?”

“Well, we didn’t want children to swallow them. Also we thought ‘DROP AND RUN’ would be a fun kids’ game”

@Natasha_Jay @electric_gumball 1952 usd50 in 2025 would be like usd600. Wow cancer was for rich kids only!
@monotonehell @Natasha_Jay @electric_gumball they could still easily get cigarettes underage though (which was a thing well into the 2000s)

@Natasha_Jay

Trump bombs incoming.

@Natasha_Jay that's horrifying. but it seems like a really cool set! I only had a lame electricity kit with a bunch of yummy lead strips to play with.
@Natasha_Jay
I wonder how life turned out for the kids who got to play with this?
@Natasha_Jay In the lower right corner I can't read what the $10k reward is for.

@BLTpizza @Natasha_Jay

“ $10,000.00 Reward
That's what the United States Government will pay to anyone who discovers deposits of Uranium Ore! Full details in the book "Prospecting for Uranium," packed with this Atomic Energy Lab.”

Kit : 13.42.2

@Lilshieste @Natasha_Jay Thanks. The article about the auction didn't say. I was thinking it was for uranium. The comic book graphic is great.
@BLTpizza @Natasha_Jay I *think* it might have been some sort of reward for successful uranium prospecting? Sadly I don’t think they’re on Mastodon but I’d like to see the proprietor of https://www.funraniumlabs.com comment on this. They’re knowledgeable about the risks when it was new and now as well as a collector of atomic era curios.

@Natasha_Jay Wow! Screw the
Uranium. A proper manual!

@Natasha_Jay

on the one hand, it wasn't a safe toy, but on the other hand, spending those same $50 on gasoline has turned out worse.

@Natasha_Jay

For 50 dollars in 1951 I would rather buy a house and yard, but the uranium pellets would be a close second.

@Natasha_Jay It's said Ayatollah Khamenei still has one.
@Natasha_Jay I hope the manual is good.

@ksaj oops, forgot about that! Here I was getting impressed that such a cool toy was *so* cheap 😅️

I'd have loved to have one of these, though the old price tag would have made me think twice (and the current price tag is rather out of my range) ⚛️

@Natasha_Jay
@badri @Natasha_Jay For the price, you can buy a computer and watch a video of how to simulate it on YouTube.
@Natasha_Jay everything was so much cooler in the 50ies … just NOT
@Natasha_Jay there is uranium sitting boxes stuffed in attics and garages that people probably have no idea it is there.
What Shouldn't Be In A Kid's Chemistry Set? | QI

@Natasha_Jay

That was a little before my time but.

How many here went to the Buster Brown store and stuck their foot in the shoe-fitting box to see the true size needed for shoes? It was a fluoroscope.

I remember we would go in and get run out by the store owner. And describe to the others what their bones looked like,

Or how many had a radioactive lozenge inserted into their nose to cure frequent tonsillitis or other illness?

Which may have been why many years later I had to take yet anther radioactive pill to treat Graves disease.

@Natasha_Jay I was a kid in the 50s (I'm 79). The spinthariscope and one of the radioactive sources, I don't remember which one, were included with my Gilbert chemistry set. This would have been a bit later in the 50s after the Atomic Energy Lab had been dropped.
@Natasha_Jay despite inflation, this would probably still be a good deal on some uranium…

@Natasha_Jay Radioactive correctness gone mad!

@Natasha_Jay

With a half life about the same as the age of the earth, the radioactivity of the unrefined uranium is negligible. It is a heavy metal though, and should be handled with gloves.

Probably more dangerous would be the watches with painted on tritium dials. One book I read as a kid explained how to use such a watch to make an xray. (tritium is back, BTW, but not as a paint).

@Natasha_Jay @oldguycrusty Where’s the rod of cobalt-60?
