The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN and Associated Press have all posted guides to using Mastodon, which in turn have been syndicated by numerous local news outlets. That matters. We're rapidly approaching a situation where the media will refer to things happening "on Mastodon" the way they referred to Twitter in, say, 2013.

Sitting in a bar terrace (in Spain)and the next table to me are a bunch of loud “expat” (immigrant) Brits who are all banging on about how great Brexit is.

The irony of their conversation seems utterly lost.

It’s taking every ounce of self control I have not to but in and tell them what utter cretins they are.

@Steveb this thread is not surprising. I have come across immigrants like that too here in my town. No point getting into arguments with them, you won't be able to get anywhere, in fact their views will become even more entrenched.
My first wild orchid of the season Sombre Bee Orchid (Ophrys fusca). I came across it yesterday while out walking the dogs. This one is living up to it's name in the shade and with morning dew over it. According to the book it flowers from late December, not sure what is classed as late December 🤔 so maybe not as early as I first thought it to be. I'm excited that #orchid season is starting 🤩

I hear new people noting how chill, tolerant, and pleasant Mastodon is.

Mastodon isn’t chill or tolerant or pleasant. It’s a tool… a foundation on which to create and maintain a culture.

It’s those who’ve been on Mastodon, run servers, and served as admins who did the hard work and created the culture you now enjoy.

Now, it’s your turn. The only way it stays tolerant and chill is by us doing the work to keep it that way.

A good example of, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Just followed some of my Birdsite friends who have opened accounts here. Using https://www.movetodon.org makes this very easy

You can move your account and keep your followers & follows if a server is closing down:

For full independence, it is much cheaper and easier than you think to start your own server, more info here:

The smallest Mastodon server starts from around $8 a month, and that includes the hosting company doing all the technical stuff for you.

Everyone is asking "What's the next Twitter going to be" and bemoaning the fact that the userbase is splintering. But splintering is a GOOD thing. The internet would be a lot healthier, more diverse, in instead of 3 or 4 dominant platforms, we had dozens or even hundreds of upstarts. Yes, centralization is convenient, but as we're seeing, it's also dangerous. If the result of the Twitter turmoil is to drive people to a more diverse, less convenient, less centralized web, I say AWESOME.
