Among my friends, we recognize the "teaser" moment as the one wherein you tell someone a crazy fact, they are too baffled to respond, and then you press on regardless because it's SO COOL.

Make friends with other self-published authors and push their books. Ask them to push yours. It's an easy, free way to get more audience outreach.
Self-publishing is a numbers game. The bigger your backlist, the more opportunity you have to make money. For the first few years concentrate on writing and publishing. Books in series, sell better than ones not in series especially if the series is complete (or open-ended with no particular end in sight like a cosy mystery series).
You will get negative reviews and ratings. Even Steven King gets those. Don't let it discourage you. No book appeals to everyone.
Proofreading is key. If you find an error later, you can always upload a new version, so fix them.
Don't quit your day job. It takes a long time to build a stable income from writing books.
