Memories of a chaotic dream:

- Travelled to the US (why tho).
- Straight off of plane and into a clothes shop where I was tasked with supporting a 14 y/o store manager.
- Took a taxi down very steep hills to a beach. Taxi driver refused payment and said “don’t call me again; I’m a terrible driver.”
- Walked into a forest to find an outdoor conveyor belt sushi place. But no sushi. Only fis football-sized, spherical doughnuts.
- Kept being asked “What state are we in?” and couldn’t answer.

…wut.

War is politics by other means and sometimes those politics are “keep Benjamin Netanyahu out of prison for a few more weeks” or “keep President Grandpa distracted with a new video game he can watch on Fox News so Steven Miller can kidnap more children,” which is how we end up with a deadly farce like “The Twelve Days War.”

Get the detainee's name, birth date, and country of origin, record as many details as possible (license plates, location, time, number of "ICE agents" & any identifying info...). Call an immigration defense hotline ASAP and tell them everything. Exchange contact info with any other witnesses.

Assume the police will not help and/or ICE will be gone by the time they arrive and/or they will show up and essentially run security for the raid. So far there are literally no instances of police intervening to stop an "ICE" abduction that I'm aware of (please correct me if wrong).

According to Walgreens
US Covid positivity is at 20.7%
which is the highest it has been
since the end of September,
but we are not where we were
in September,
no, things are different now,
for as bad as things were then,
we are now somewhere different
we are now somewhere worse.
i don't think enough people realize that when you make a phone call to someone else, the other phone literally stops what it is doing and makes a noise and shakes, it's very distracting, please do not make phone calls
Le sigh.

Again, a Mac OS 9 inspired window and an Adwaita window, with a focus on the scroll bars

I actually turned on the "high contrast" mode from settings for the Adwaita window and this is what I got, a scroll bar with rounded corners, which means: headaches if you have astigmatism, and also it's really really hard to tell when you're at the top or just close to it

Mac OS 9 scrollbars: "You can tell when you're at the top"

Just use mechanical door handles. Just Use Mechanical Door Handles. JUST USE MECHANICAL DOOR HANDLES

@jalefkowit
Oof.
Just. Use. Mechanical. Door. Handles.

@silvermoon82 @jalefkowit

👏 Just 👏 Use 👏 Mechanical 👏 Door 👏 Handles 👏

@rysiek @jalefkowit @silvermoon82 I will be distinctly amused if they include a dynamo crank on the cars similarly to those that were once present on very early cars.

@lispi314 @rysiek @jalefkowit @silvermoon82

The electric vehicle from Bezos is a small pickup truck with manual windows, doors, and everything. I must say it's something I'd consider getting because you don't have to have any of that electric stuff in everything. If you want the paraphernalia of electric gizmos it's extra.

@MyWoolyMastadon @silvermoon82 @jalefkowit @rysiek I remember. For all that cranked windows were obnoxious to open, they sure didn't break as often.

@lispi314 @rysiek @jalefkowit @silvermoon82

Easy to fix too. Crack the door open and all the rollers and gears are at your disposal.

@MyWoolyMastadon @lispi314 @rysiek @jalefkowit @silvermoon82 That part’s the same with power windows. Both hand-crank and power windows share most parts. In almost all instances of both cases, the window itself is mounted on a regulator with a cable system. The difference is what drives the cable.
@lispi314 @rysiek @MyWoolyMastadon @jalefkowit @silvermoon82 my car has crank windows. It's also devoid of abs. It does have electric power steering, and central locking, but that's as technical as it gets.

@MyWoolyMastadon @lispi314 @rysiek @jalefkowit @silvermoon82

diito.. simplicity is genius in this world we live in today.

@jalefkowit I know this isn't the technical definition of fail deadly...
@mackensen @jalefkowit
It's deadly as fuck if your baby is still in the car.

@jalefkowit This is starting to feel like the whole using anything but a plate in 'cool' restaurants.

In cars it's anything but buttons and handles. There's an 'app' or screen for that.

@jalefkowit One day, I hope electronic handles will go the way of the automatic seatbelt
@jalefkowit I feel like battlestar galactica got things right. Tech is cool but no AI and keep as much simple as you can. Only use tech for things that actually need tech. (I only watched a few early episodes so maybe i got the wrong takesway but i stand by it lol)

@jalefkowit

But space tech! Everyone must drive a space capsule where only the ground crew can open the hatch.

@jalefkowit And then .... with a dead battery ...
@jalefkowit It's almost like not all uses of technology are good. Go figure. 🤡
@BruceMirken @jalefkowit I wonder if technology follows a broad distribution from good through neutral to fkn evil or if it is bimodal? Washing machine? Good! Nuclear fission?
@jalefkowit @troublewithwords "I would like more electrical failure modes" - no car owner on the planet
@jalefkowit I just went through a fairly bad car wreck in a Chevy Bolt and I was really really really glad to have door handles when the nice bystanders helped me get out of the car
@jalefkowit don't all car fobs have a mechancal key inside? or is that just the ones I know?
Will Your Smartphone Replace Your Car Key?

Tesla has gone keyless with the Model 3, while other automakers are proceeding more slowly with virtual car keys. Consumer Reports checks out the smartphone as car key.

Consumer Reports
@jalefkowit @acm_redfox I believe other brands have a separate battery to power doors etc.
@jalefkowit @acm_redfox our Hyundai Ioniq 5 fob has a physical key inside, with the keyhole accessible by pushing the back of the recessed handle. The door release inside are mechanical. [edit to add: “if the 12V battery falls below 8.4V and one exits the vehicle using the mechanical release, the vehicle may remain locked and can’t be unlocked” — so, no mechanical lock? And why doesn’t the EV main battery charge the 12V accessory battery?]

@jadp @jalefkowit @acm_redfox

This is a great question. The 12V system is charged from the main battery while driving but not while parked? Seriously?

WWHHHYYYYY?

(I have been bitten by this, it is super annoying having a flat 12V battery connected to an 80% full 60 kwh one)

@Tallish_Tom @jalefkowit @acm_redfox interesting, our EV has a yellow light on the dashboard that comes on when the main battery is charging the 12V battery. I’ve often seen it glowing in the garage, especially if we haven’t driven the car in a few days. My guess is that all the connectivity and self-check features drain the 12V frequently, though the main battery doesn’t lose much charge
@jalefkowit I have a plug-in hybrid with a hidden mechanical key. [shrug]
@acm_redfox @jalefkowit It's not the lock (though it's also the lock). It's that some cars have flush door handles that need the car to be powered on before you can use them to pull the door open.
@rupert @jalefkowit holy crap! that's just... unnecessary!
@jalefkowit At least you can get out
@jalefkowit On my 2018 Accord hybrid, if the battery is dead you can't open the trunk, which is where I was keeping my jumper cables.
@jalefkowit carry an emergency door opener?
@carstenfranke @jalefkowit This tool wonˋt help. You can destroy the Windows - and then? Wehre is the inside handle to open the door?
@khgu @jalefkowit the inside door handle has a mechanical release
@carstenfranke @jalefkowit As far as I know not in a Tesla.
@khgu @jalefkowit the original post is about a Ford Mustang
@carstenfranke @jalefkowit ...
After an accident!
@khgu @jalefkowit oh wow, these are insane suggestions... You will not have time... There was an incident here in the US where several teenagers died in a Tesla that caught on fire, not a big accident, but it lost power and they could not open the doors or windows. Bystanders could not get in either, and they could not break the windows. I do have one of these hammers on my car...

@carstenfranke @jalefkowit I know. This is the reason my hybrid-car has mechanical handles inside and on lock with mechanical key outside. KISS - keep it simple, stupid.

BTW: it is a very good idea to have a glassbreaker with seat belt cutter with you, offcourse.

@jalefkowit

> You know how new innovations sometimes seem fine until a flaw exposes that maybe we should have just stuck with the old ways? This is one of those times.

This is not one of those times. This is one of those "everyone saw this coming" times.

@jalefkowit

The fascination that manufacturers have (had) with all things tech and how they could gimmick them into a car is as depressing as it is short sighted.

Cars are cars. They are not toys in your house.

Physical handles, dials, buttons and levers are there for a reason.

Touch screens and sensor pads are for your Xbox.

All of them need to get with the program.

@Arapalla @jalefkowit
My current car is long-term rental, so quite new. It has no mechanical means of opening the windows: no escape if it falls into water; no way of closing opened windows if there's a fault. If something goes wrong when you're inside with the doors locked, you can't get out. I hate this.
What's happened to safety design??

@sunflowerinrain @jalefkowit

Design rules are not keeping up with technology.

Governments are abdicating responsibilty for design rules back to the manufacturers.

Just like aviation did.

Aaand it's going to have the same results.

@sunflowerinrain
You should be able to kick out the windshield once the pressure equalises.

Safety got sold for profits.

@Arapalla @jalefkowit

@jalefkowit And, give me a fucking key hole & key insert into the ignition ffs...and buttons & dials...
@jalefkowit I give credit to VW, my new vehicle does both.
@jalefkowit ha, I remember when Musk got trapped inside one of his Teslas. It was hilarious
@jalefkowit
I miss mechanical door handles on modern cars.
I have a 2001 so it still has that option (with a simple key fob for easier access which is a nice convenience but not a necessity!) But any other car I’m around from the last few years it’s rather annoying and troubling to me that you just walk to the door and then just push a button to start the car… I don’t know, but that doesn’t sound safe or reliable to me , ever.
@jalefkowit I keep saying that a zombie apocalypse w/ these shitty cars would be extra horrific. You either get trapped in a car w/ a zombie, or think you can escape a horde in a car.

@jalefkowit

or have a separate emergency battery.

@jalefkowit

Mechanical door handles are insufficient; there must also be at least one mechanical lock which is not dependent on battery charge, and a clear method of accessing the battery for charging.

I found this out the hard way nearly 20 years ago when in a distant city and my locks wouldn't operate even though they and the handles were mechanical. Had to borrow some pliers and rip through the front grille to open the bonnet to get at the battery.

@jalefkowit

Specifically, each door handle contained a solenoid bolt which only allowed them to engage the rest of the mechanism when energised, whether or not locked.

My current car (2005 model) has a radio central locking system but also one actual "lock" (not really a lock, more an inverse lock), which operates with a hidden key to engage that one door handle irrespective of battery charge.

@jalefkowit Your reminder that The Autopian was one of the sites that proclaimed Elon Musk’s NAZI salute was an “awkward wave”.
