Sitting in a café at Kampus Hybernskà, Praha, contemplating the last 3 days as I wait for my train back.
The most reserved (or rather ignorant) of all people I came across in this academic conference is a trans sister
. The only other trans person there. Assuming the few queer academics in a niche part of academia would bond over a shared experience & interest in theory but, nope. Dismissive right from my 1st attempt to start a conversation
. Oh, humans … ugh
As much as experiences like this one are irritating in this (still) early stage of my transition, I am all the more grateful for the solidarity, openness and support coming from (tadaa!) (btw charming) gay men. As disenchanting and surprising those encounters can be, they're important reminders to me not to narrow down my sense of community to trans siblings but keeping it wide open for queers of all flavours and orientations.
