Portugal in 1974 was a country that was suffering under the dictatorial regime of Marcelo Caetano, who in 1968 took over from the dictatorship of António de Olíveira Salazar, who had been in power for 36 years. He in turn had taken over a previous dictatorship that had installed itself in 1926.

Like all dictatorial regimes, this one had a pretty strong censorship bureau, and the fact this song was pretty bland is a reflection of that process. It was a mostly innocuous piece of 1970s cisheteronormative macho serial monogamist fluff.

But that’s all you could do, back then. They still liked it more than the competition.
