Get the detainee's name, birth date, and country of origin, record as many details as possible (license plates, location, time, number of "ICE agents" & any identifying info...). Call an immigration defense hotline ASAP and tell them everything. Exchange contact info with any other witnesses.

Assume the police will not help and/or ICE will be gone by the time they arrive and/or they will show up and essentially run security for the raid. So far there are literally no instances of police intervening to stop an "ICE" abduction that I'm aware of (please correct me if wrong).

Thanks. I'm unboosting. I never assume calling cops is helpful for anything ofc, tho anything that slows down an ICE encounter makes it potentially harder for them to complete

cc @SallyStrange I think I boosted this bc you did?

@inquiline @SallyStrange

I mean, some of this makes hypothetical sense, but I think it's outweighed by the increased danger police presence inevitably brings, especially when the ONLY thing that has worked as far as I know to stop an abduction in progress is people mobbing up and preventing them from taking someone.

I know city officials are trying to save face by passing laws that agents need to identify themselves and so forth. Maybe this will have some effect. But even if these were enforceable, and I don't think they are, the only people that could enforce them are cops who we already know are at best only interested in their own self-preservation, and at worst ideologically aligned and actively collaborating with ICE.

@inquiline also, just straight up talking shit and making them uncomfortable seems to work sometimes, LOL

@other_ghosts
100%. I was in another thread saying I think those proposed laws are a diversion, at best--the city and state can't dictate the feds' behavior, and most of all, exactly as you state, asking cops to enforce rules about cops... does not work. (Also LAPD/LASD with exposed faces has no problem violating tons of laws and brutalizing protesters...)

This video is inspiring, she just yells at ICE until they leave:

I posted a reply to the original post with information that applies to Oregon - some links and some numbers to call.

I'm not an expert! I got the information from the Oregon DOJ website (https://www.doj.state.or.us/oregon-department-of-justice/civil-rights/sanctuary-promise/community-toolkit/)

If anyone has corrections just let me know.

(*am no expert either but) I thought your point about recording but not calling 911 was exactly right. When I boosted I was primarily being hasty (always), but also thinking that performatively reporting a kidnapping might throw ICE off a little bit. I wasn't thinking about cops showing up and saving the day because that absolutely would not be the outcome I'd expect. I'm really glad
@other_ghosts flagged my careless boost!

@inquiline @other_ghosts
I almost boosted myself.

It's hard to think about all the consequences in real time!

(esp. with my cognitive impairment!)

Looks like we now have an example of this exact scenario playing out and LAPD is accused of assisting ICE. (and sharing with OP too, but there are enough comments saying the same thing that I'm guessing they don't care)

Immigrant rights activists call out LAPD over alleged collaboration with ICE in raids

Immigrant-rights activists protested the LAPD's alleged involvement with ICE after another reported immigration raid in downtown L.A.

@inquiline @ahimsa_pdx

Yeah this is infuriating. People are going to keep saying call 911 and it's going to keep happening. ICE is probably glad they are there. I can't see why not.

@inquiline I guess I'll give some credit to the ABC affiliate for sort of actually taking this story seriously. If anything positive does come out of this, it will be that it forced more people to reckon with the fact that LAPD is enabling the raids, or at least not in any way protecting people from them, whether or not they are coordinating in advance.
