"I left home at the age of ten because I was effeminate. I had nowhere else to go. The street was my home." — Sylvia Rivera, Stonewall veteran, STAR co-founder. The girl in today's story had a home, a school, and a law that found her anyway. Rivera had nothing and made a movement out of refusing to disappear. Witness is not a soft act. It is the decision to keep your eyes open when closing them would cost you less — what the sea's buoys did in the dark, what a trans kid did fighting a policy alone.

Imagine the frame: a plastic chemical toilet placed on grass outside a South Carolina elementary school, late May sun bleaching the blue siding. A 14-year-old has to walk past her classmates to use it. The bathroom inside is locked to her. HB 4756 — the Student Physical Privacy Act — signed by Henry McMaster Friday. South Carolina becomes the 22nd state to pass a trans bathroom ban, per the Movement Advancement Project. The bill mandates same-sex college roommates (already near-universal practice), which makes the porta-potty clause the actual point. Idaho criminalized trans bathroom use in April with possible life imprisonment. A child should not have to walk past her classmates to a plastic box in a parking lot to relieve herself. A child.

A child stands at the door of a South Carolina public school. The bathroom is locked. The only legal option: a plastic chemical toilet on the grass where every classmate watches her walk to it. HB 4756. McMaster signed Friday. The 22nd state to legislate a child's body as a problem.

Lindsey Graham. Seventy years old. Never married. Thirty-one years voting against every LGBTQ+ protection that crossed his desk. A closet door rattling so loudly that Laura Loomer, under oath in August, said Trump's own staff have told her "in confidence" what they already know. Wendy refuses the easy frame. Graham's sexuality is none of our business. His voting record is. The hypocrisy is not who he loves — it's who he votes to harm while loving them. Democrats running "gonna blow" homophobic war-porn ads have decided homophobia is acceptable when pointed at a Republican. Which means they have decided homophobia is acceptable. Existence is not the betrayal. The vote is.

Tuesday night at the Tune Inn on Capitol Hill. William Paul, 33, son of Senator Rand Paul, slid onto a stool next to Congressman Mike Lawler and asked if he was Jewish. What followed was a ten-minute drunken tirade — the war in Iran is "all about the gays and the Jews, and I hate them both, and I don't care if they die." He flipped Lawler off, knocked over a barstool, and apologized for the alcohol the next morning. Alcohol doesn't invent the sentence. It removes the social hardware that keeps it inside the mouth. The hate was already there. He apologized for being drunk. Not for the wish.
