The starvation of Gaza is shameful. Crippling sanctions on Israel are needed

Thirty-one Israeli signatories express their shame, rage and agony over the plight of Palestinians and call for action from the international community

We, Israelis dedicated to a peaceful future for our country and our Palestinian neighbours, write this with grave shame, in rage and in agony. Our country is starving the people of Gaza to death and contemplating the forced removal of millions of Palestinians from the Strip. The international community must impose crippling sanctions on Israel until it ends this brutal campaign and implements a permanent ceasefire.

#Israeli public figures call for ‘crippling sanctions’ on Israel over Gaza starvation

Thirty-one high-profile Israelis accuse Tel Aviv of ‘brutal campaign’ and demand permanent ceasefire in letter

from #TheGuardian #Guardian

...the letter accuses #Israel of “starving the people of #Gaza to death and contemplating the forced removal of millions of #Palestinians from the strip”.

It adds: “The international community must impose crippling sanctions on Israel until it ends this brutal campaign and implements a permanent ceasefire.”

The letter is significant both for its unvarnished criticism of Israel and for breaking the taboo of endorsing stringent international sanctions, in a country where politicians have promoted laws targeting those advocating such measures.

Activist [Awdah Hathaleen*] Who Helped Film “No Other Land” Shot and Killed by Israeli Settler | Truthout (2025-07-28)

>> “... My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered this evening. He was standing in front of the community center in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life. This is how Israel erases us — one life at a time,” said Basel Adra, activist and Palestinian co-director of #NoOtherLand.

>> [Israeli co-filmmaker Yuval] Abraham said that local residents identified Hathaleen’s killer as Yinon Levi, who lives in an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied #WestBank. Levi was sanctioned … under the Biden administration in April 2024, ...

>> President Donald Trump lifted the U.S. sanction on Levi and other Israeli settlers and settler groups on his first day in office this January.

FAQ: How does the report [Our Genocide] address the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023? | B'Tselem

https://www.btselem.org/publications/202507_our_genocide
———

>> … The report addresses the deep trauma experienced by Israelis that day, and the Israeli hostages, some of whom are still being held in Gaza. Our analysis shows how the Israeli government has cynically exploited the trauma experienced by many Israelis and used it to carry out genocide and ethnic cleansing in the Gaza Strip.

>> One crime does not justify another – certainly not the mass killing of civilians or an attempt to erase and destroy an entire group. There is nothing that can justify genocide, and starvation and destruction have nothing to do with self-defense. The only way to ensure that the horrors of 7 October do not recur is to immediately stop the annihilation, and demand equality, justice, freedom and security for all the people living between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.

>> “It is a dark day when an alliance of free peoples, gathered to affirm their values and defend their interests, resolves to submit,” Prime Minister François Bayrou wrote about the deal, which imposes 15 percent tariffs on European imports to the United States, but lowers barriers in European countries for American imports.

>> #France had been leading a charge in Europe to retaliate against the United States ahead of the deal, after an earlier threat by President Trump to impose a punishing 30 percent #tariff on the Europeans. Mr. Trump’s on-again, off-again tariff threats had galvanized President Emmanuel Macron in particular, who said the European Union had no choice but to present a show of force… 🤷

Commission pushes to partially suspend Israel from EU research fund – POLITICO (2025-07-28)

>> The European Commission wants to partially suspend Israel from participating in its flagship research and development program, Horizon Europe.

>> The proposed suspension follows the EU's review of its association agreement with Israel, which opens up advantageous bilateral relations. In June the review found Israel in breach of its human rights obligations under the deal, with EU foreign ministers slated to discuss potential consequences during a meeting next month …

>> Israeli universities and researchers funded through the more traditional Horizon Europe programs would be unaffected.

>> The decision still needs backing from a qualified majority of #EU countries. 🤔

‘Total Failure’: Israel’s Return to War Heaped Ruin on Gaza and Did Little for Israelis

#Israel ended a truce in Gaza in March, hoping to break #Hamas. The move has heightened suffering for #Palestinians but achieved few, if any, #Israeli goals.

Then the resumption of war felt as if someone had “shut off the last source of life,” said Karam Rabah, a civil servant in central #Gaza. “We thought we’d survived the worst, then it got even worse.”

The truce ...had brought some respite, said Mr. Rabah, who is paid by the #WestBank-based PA. “Children went back to some kind of learning, families returned to their homes,” he said. Then the fighting restarted, and “homes that had survived were suddenly gone, and even food became scarce,” he added. “I never thought that I would fight for a kilogram of flour for my kids.”
