The United States is now functionally equivalent to Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

As of today there is no more "it's going to happen" - it has now happened, fully and completely. The US government has been taken over by ultranationalist authoritarians intent on ethnic cleansing. That should be the headline of every newspaper and news program. Sound the alarm. Sound all the alarms.

A reminder about the prohibitions in the Geneva Conventions against starving civilians, destroying foodstuffs or drinking water installations, or forcing civilians to move away. Here's the text of Article 54 of Protocol I of the 1977 Geneva Convention (alt-text is embedded in the image):

This headline is ridiculous. The US is currently cracking down on the people who harvest US tomatoes and sending them to a swamp concentration camp with no representation and due process, and publicly hoping people get eaten by alligators.

Dude, if you're still posting "first they came for" -- that was a decade ago. They're building death camps now.

WeTransfer just changed their ToS to allow them to train AI on any files you transfer through them.

Don't use there service, especially for work that you don't have the right to relicense to them (e.g., commercial work that's exactly the most likely to create the huge files WeTransfer specializes in).

(ETA: this is already going boom so I'm muting it.)

New, at KrebsOnSecurity.com: Marko Elez, a 25-year-old employee at Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has been granted access to sensitive databases at the U.S. Social Security Administration, the Treasury and Justice departments, and the Department of Homeland Security. So it should fill all Americans with a deep sense of confidence to learn that Mr. Elez over the weekend inadvertently published a private key that allowed anyone to interact directly with more than four dozen large language models (LLMs) developed by Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI.

Spammers have been programmatically creating accounts on Mastodon instances for years. Sometimes they post once and never again, sometimes they post on a schedule. Sometimes they never post, like a waiting botnet.

As Mastodon's anti-spam solutions are effectively nonexistent, most instances in our network require manual approval of new accounts. Up until recently, it was easy to spot a spammer; their join reasons were generic.

ChatGPT spammers have now arrived.

Y'all I'm beginning to think the writers of Andor are trying to give people a message.
The irony that this inspiring story of revolution against Fascism is streaming on Disney+.
@RickiTarr shows you how afraid anyone is that Star Wars fans are going to, well, do any actual Star Wars-ing.
@AlexanderVI @RickiTarr I see far more people wearing t-shirts with Darth Vader than Luke Skywalker.
@michaelgemar @AlexanderVI @RickiTarr but "I have friends everywhere" posters are popping up in protests all over the world <3
@danielaKay @michaelgemar @AlexanderVI @RickiTarr I haven't seen "I have friends everywhere" posters, but it might start appearing as graffiti in my town. Thnx
@danielaKay @michaelgemar @AlexanderVI @RickiTarr protests in Asia have often included the Hunger Games salutes
@michaelgemar the devil has the best armourer

@AlexanderVI @RickiTarr Elon Musk _is_ Moff Gideon. He's got a network of global communications space lasers, robotic servants, and a secret cloning lab --- he is living Star Wars

#MoffGideon

@CubeRootOfTrue @AlexanderVI The insanity that he sees himself as a hero.

@RickiTarr @CubeRootOfTrue @AlexanderVI

Luthen? I don't think anyone truly sees themselves as heroes. Other than the guy who wrote the speech, Dedra, Krenic, and especially Syril.

None, no one on the 'good' side can say that they think of themselves as the 'Hero' with a straight face. They all just hope to kill the empire. The best they do is hope that no one after them has to suffer the way they did.

@CubeRootOfTrue @AlexanderVI @RickiTarr No Elon Mush is Admiral Thrawn from Ahsoka. I have put this picture into presentations labeled as Elon Musk and everyone thought it was.

Later noted the typo Elon Mush. Decided to leave it as better than his real name, Like another recent typo I saw saying "tech bors"

@rrb @CubeRootOfTrue @AlexanderVI @RickiTarr It was so blatant, I thought it was intentional.
@jrdepriest @CubeRootOfTrue @AlexanderVI @RickiTarr It might have been, Except Admiral Thrawn was less outlandishly bizarre. He also was not as obviously racist addicted to ketamine.
@RickiTarr you could always pirate it! đŸŽâ€â˜ ïž
@RickiTarr This goes to show that nobody is *actually* thinking the violence in society comes from movies.
@RickiTarr and that it’s a retelling of the rise of Joseph Stalin. Turns out “hero” is a relative term.

@passwordsarehard4 @RickiTarr

How do you mean? Is it similar in how Andor was a small time thief and rose through the ranks?

@RickiTarr because it makes money. As Kurt Vonnegut Jr once said...

"During the Vietnam War... every respectable artist in this country was against the war. It was like a laser beam. We were all aimed in the same direction. The power of this weapon turns out to be that of a custard pie dropped from a stepladder six feet high."

@autonomousapps @RickiTarr

But they won? They successfully gave voice to the disaffected population that finally made America withdraw from the war.

@Madagascar_Sky @RickiTarr it's the word "finally" that's the tell

I'm not trying to preach pre-defeat, I'm just trying to say it's on Disney+ because they don't care about the message, they care that it makes money. We may as well ask why the NYT sometimes publishes liberal voices

@autonomousapps @Madagascar_Sky Everyone sees violence and thinks that's what fixed it, but I disagree, is violence often a part of it sure, but knowing you aren't alone is huge, and art has always been a part of revolution and protest. It's never one thing, it's many.
@RickiTarr The irony is not lost on me. I honestly can’t believe Disney allowed Andor to made with that story. Maybe Disney execs were too distracted by scrubbing out the queer identity of the main character in Elio.
@SailorDisco Listen if artists want to use Capitalist money to show plain truths, then that is it's own form of protest.

Some more fun quotes:

“The pace of repression outstrips our ability to understand it.” — Karis Nemik

“I’d rather die trying to take them down than die giving them what they want.” — Cassian Andor

"The imperial need for control is so desperate because it's so unnatural,".

"Tyranny requires constant effort,".

"Oppression is the mask of fear,".
-Maarva Andor

Sorry have to post the whole quote:

“There will be times when struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this: freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause. Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. And remember this: the imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this: the day will come when all of these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire’s authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this: Try.”

@RickiTarr wow, having the feels from this! "Try"
@acm_redfox @RickiTarr Fiona Shaw's performance was magnificent.
@RickiTarr The Nemik Manifesto was awesome.
@RickiTarr live your life such that your remains are baked into a brick used the smash ICE upside the head
@RickiTarr If it's all too much, take a rest then come back and try some more.
@Alison ❀ yes, we all should still be doing things that bring us joy and rest, being empty does nothing.

@RickiTarr so many amazing monologues in this show. I also love Saw Gerrera in season 2:

"You think I'm crazy? Yes, I am. Revolution is not for the sane. Look at us: unloved, hunted, cannon fodder. We'll all be dead before the Republic is back and yet... here we are. Where are you, boy? You're here! You're not with Luthen, you're here! You're right here, and you're ready to fight! We're the rhydo, kid. We're the fuel. We're the thing that explodes when there's too much friction in the air!"

@s427 Yes! My post could have been a mile long, great writing.
@RickiTarr that is a beautiful statement made by Cassian Andor!
@RickiTarr Don’t forget "Fuck the Empire!” Excuse me I mean "Fight the Empire!"
@RickiTarr Some of the best television of this century!
@RickiTarr if only the emperor had orange skin and a big blonde toupee
@RickiTarr if you want an on point message, watch season 4 of Babylon 5!
@alexadeswift @RickiTarr I rewatched Babylon 5 a few months ago, and it has practically aged in reverse.
@david_chisnall @RickiTarr it is looking fresher than it has in years I think, which considering the distinctly fascist overtones of season 4 were considered completely out there, is quite prophetic.
@david_chisnall @alexadeswift @RickiTarr I rewatched Babylon 5 during Trump’s first term and had the same thought. One of my all time favorite series, even if it’s hella unsettling in season 4 now. I was astonished how well it had aged.

@jonobie @david_chisnall @RickiTarr it was very well made, and to be honest I have no idea why the talk is about a reboot! I for one would welcome a new series set a century in the future on a new station called Babylon 6.

It is a big universe that was created and barely scratched the surface. If any series could be up for a reboot it would be Crusade, which by comparison has not aged quite so well and didnt seem as well made!

#Babylon5 #Crusade

@alexadeswift As if I haven't watched the absolute GOAT LOL
@RickiTarr
 aaahh, the Space Goat!
@RickiTarr that when one huge entertainment corporation hires every writer the only sci fi left is star wars?
@zombiewarrior I mean, The Expanse and Star Trek Discovery would like a word...
@acm_redfox the expanse and beacon 23 both got cancelled for not being star wars
star trek is the same as star wars, an endless IP property being fed writers and storylines forever

@RickiTarr i am not a star wars person (as a kid i walked out of return of the jedi cuz gads) but boy is Andor good.

it's exactly the right thing for the moment, a sort of crash course on fascism and dissent. maybe for a generation who hadn't really been exposed to those ideas before. i wonder how many people who watch it end up w raoul vaneigem or reading about the black panthers, etc.

@RickiTarr I don't know, maybe they are being subtle?
@RickiTarr If you think that, what about this panel from a recent "The Phantom" comic?

@RickiTarr

Strongly inspired by Maria Ressa, I'm sure.

@RickiTarr i was not planning on watching this show, but now I have no choice but to watch it.

@RickiTarr

A great deal of sciene fiction is attempting to get an important message across 🙂🖖
