Not one, but two urban bunnies spotted in a small park in downtown Denver.

No. 43 in my photo collection of signs of unique Spanish-language business names ending in 𝗲𝗿í𝗮: GINTONIQUERÍA

Not a real Spanish word according to the Real Academia Española, but that doesn't stop a bar specializing in gin and tonic drinks from branding themselves as a gintoniquería! The alternative term "gintonería" is also apparently used, but I haven't spotted one of those yet in the wild. This is a good example of the adaptability of the 𝗲𝗿í𝗮 suffix in Spanish-speaking places. You'll also note this sign has another 𝗲𝗿í𝗮 on it. I'll get to that one shortly... it deserves its own post.

No. 44 in my photo collection of signs of unique Spanish-language business names ending in 𝗲𝗿í𝗮: COCTELERÍA

This 𝗲𝗿í𝗮 appeared on the sign along with "gintoniquería" in No. 43, but to keep my numbering scheme in order, "coctelería" gets its own post. Of course, a "coctelería" is a cocktail bar and has the Spanish word "coctel" (also "cóctel") as its root, borrowed from English.

Entryway of the "Segovia" apartments in Denver's Cheesman Park neighborhood, featuring a Moorish-inspired horseshoe arch, layered brickwork, and a deeply recessed portal that contribute to the building's Spanish Eclectic style. Below the arch, an oversized transom filled with a grid of glass panes makes the entry feel taller and more monumental. The carved stone "shoulders" at the base of the arch serve as visual hinges, elegantly connecting the arch to the portal below and contribute to a larger stone accent system that includes the stone-tile panel above the arch and the stone caps atop the flanking piers. A pair of tall narrow lanterns complete the old-world look. The whole composition is reserved but romantic, and one of my favorite doors in the neighborhood.

Spanish Eclectic and Spanish Colonial Revival architectural styles were hugely popular with early 20th century architects in Denver.

Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood is a treasure of late-19th century and early-20th century architecture. This elegant home was constructed in 1895 and is one of numerous buildings in Denver that was built during this era out of local Colorado sandstone that features a deeply saturated red/orange color. Today this building holds six apartments, but it was probably built originally as a single-family residence for a wealthy family.

The building's style is mostly Richardsonian Romanesque, with thick walls and rusticated stone construction, a rounded bay, and an overall sense of weight. But the intricate decorative carvings throughout the façade reflect a lingering Victorian influence that serves to lighten the building's masonry heaviness.

What I particularly like is how this building has weathered beautifully over the past 130 years. Sandstone weathers at a faster rate than a harder material like granite, resulting in a softness and roundness to corners and edges and subtle variation to flat surfaces, giving this building a smooth, warm, comfortable appearance.

Entry door of the "El Cortez" apartment building in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood featuring paired engaged columns with ornate capitals, a name-bearing entablature, and a richly detailed semicircular tympanum flanked by twisted shafts. Two guardian lions complete the exuberant composition, which has Spanish Baroque/Spanish Revival overtones and is typical of the eclectic revivalist architecture used throughout central Denver in early 20th century walk-up apartment buildings.

I pass this building frequently on walks through the neighborhood and it always catches my eye.

One of the most beautiful interiors among the many historic federal buildings in Washington DC is in the Library of Congress, what is essentially the national library of the United States. Here is a vertical panorama of the Main Reading Room. The Library was completed in 1897.
