Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood is a treasure of late-19th century and early-20th century architecture. This elegant home was constructed in 1895 and is one of numerous buildings in Denver that was built during this era out of local Colorado sandstone that features a deeply saturated red/orange color. Today this building holds six apartments, but it was probably built originally as a single-family residence for a wealthy family.

The building's style is mostly Richardsonian Romanesque, with thick walls and rusticated stone construction, a rounded bay, and an overall sense of weight. But the intricate decorative carvings throughout the façade reflect a lingering Victorian influence that serves to lighten the building's masonry heaviness.

What I particularly like is how this building has weathered beautifully over the past 130 years. Sandstone weathers at a faster rate than a harder material like granite, resulting in a softness and roundness to corners and edges and subtle variation to flat surfaces, giving this building a smooth, warm, comfortable appearance.
