No. 38 in my photo collection of signs of unique Spanish-language business names ending in 𝗲𝗿í𝗮: CUPCAKERÍA

In Spanish, the 𝗲𝗿í𝗮 suffix can be added to just about any word to indicate what's made or sold at a business, and that includes tacking 𝗲𝗿í𝗮 onto what is clearly a non-Spanish word like "cupcake." It still works!

A is for 'A new challenge'

I've been struggling to find motivation with my photography for a little while, particularly with life and work generally getting in the way - which is frustrating when it's a thing you want to prioritise.

Which is why when I came across the 'Alphabet Superset' by YouTuber Struthless, I felt it could be achievable within the constraints of my capacity right now.

The premise is simple - each week undertake a creative activity corresponding to a subsequent letter of the alphabet and share it.

And so with that in mind, I've set myself a focus to capture signs and labels out and about in my everyday world.

It's something I can capture quickly on a walk to work, when I'm out running errands, or even when life permits me to go further afield and actually explore outside my borders of daily life.

My goal is to focus on sharing photos in alphabetical order each week, however I'm allowing myself the flexibility to capture my 'letter images' as they come up, and edit them at a time that works for me.

And with all that introduction to the project out of the way, let's get started with the letter 'A'.

I liked this sign as it had this “please do not climb on top
Or fuck around and find out” attitude

(it says something like
“Please do not climb
Bear the consequences yourself”)

One of the main BLAG 08 (https://bl.ag/08) features examines the changes in Hong Kong’s renowned signscape through the eyes of Henry Steiner, nearly 60 years after his 1966 essay on the subject.

The piece was written by Billy Potts (https://www.handsomeco.com) and his contributor copies arrived in Hong Kong this week. Here's Henry checking it out for the first time, and Billy wrote to me to say:

"Henry says, 'That's pretty good. Nice.' That's about the highest praise you could get from Henry and you* got it."

*Should be 'we', but I'm honoured either way!

[4/365] Random drive & walk F-tier sign. As a retired government employee, I LITERALLY laughed out loud; another example of government waste/inefficiency.

Being friendly is obviously good, but:

1. Sign placed at residential subdivision's lowest traffic area, 800m (1/2 mile) from a dead end, not at entrance where everyone sees it.
2. Do residents drive unfriendly by default? Otherwise, what's the point? (rhetorical questions)
