Having its impact factor "taken away" seems like a triumph for #elife as far as I am concerned. I think more journals should aspire to the same.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation. đŸ§”
Open letter from a group of sleuths re problems with editors/papers at Scientific Reports

They've published 23K papers in 2024 with APC of ÂŁ2090, raising ÂŁ48 million from this journal alone, so should be able to put resource into cleaning this up.

Any #Drosophila people know if you can take flies on the eurostar?

This is an extremely compelling cell biology mystery! I'd love to know what's going on with these things. (Although IMO contrary to the article, I don't think you can say something is exceptionally conserved if not found in flies, worms, yeast, arabidopsis etc...) https://www.science.org/content/article/biologist-aims-solve-cell-s-biggest-mystery-could-it-help-cancer-patients-too #science
Journal that charges ÂŁ9000 for publishing an article gives advice for how to spot predatory publishers...đŸ€” https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-01437-2
I’m worried I’ve been contacted by a predatory publisher — how do I find out?

Researchers frequently receive invitations to publish in journals that they might not have heard of. Nature asked two scientists how they would check whether a publication is legitimate.

Major bad #ClimateCrisis news just published in today's #Guardian - "Exclusive: Planet is headed for at least 2.5C of heating with disastrous results for #humanity poll of hundreds of scientists finds - World’s top #climate scientists expect #GlobalHeating to blast past 1.5C target.

Hundreds of the world’s leading climate scientists expect global temperatures to rise to at least 2.5C (4.5F) this century, blasting past internationally agreed targets and causing catastrophic consequences for humanity and the #planet, an exclusive Guardian survey has revealed.

Almost 80% of the respondents, all from the authoritative Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( #IPCC), foresee at least 2.5C of global heating above preindustrial levels, while almost half anticipate at least 3C (5.4F). Only 6% thought the internationally agreed 1.5C (2.7F) limit will be met."

Many of the scientists envisage a “semi-dystopian” future, with #famine, #conflicts and mass #migration, driven by #heatwaves, #wildfires, #floods and #storms of an intensity and frequency far beyond those that have already struck.

Numerous experts said they had been left feeling hopeless, infuriated and scared by the failure of governments to act despite the clear scientific evidence provided.

“I think we are headed for major societal disruption within the next five years,” said Gretta Pecl, at the University of Tasmania. “[Authorities] will be overwhelmed by extreme event after extreme event, food production will be disrupted. I could not feel greater despair over the future.”

University College London shoutout! UCL is unwilling to set up a Mastodon account now, but they say that if there's lots of UCL presence here already it will nudge them in this direction. If you're at UCL or know someone who is, and you're on here, please reply to this to let us know! Current chief plotters: @sellathechemist , me and maybe more)
