Content Warnings: -
The Fediverse isn't keen on politics posts.
We need to understand that the etiquette here is to "hide" such posts behind CWs for the majority of folk here.
You can set your profile to auto show these so it won't affect you and keeps the place safe for those who don't want to see any of it.

Also use your hashtags folks! This place works on hashtags.

For those who are just getting started on Mastodon, especially if you have a large following, I urge you to enable multi-factor authentication on your account here and on Twitter

@mathewi @adamdavidson @JamesGleick @joshtpm @konomikitten i thought the idea of a content warning was a little ❄️-ish at first BUT now I sort of love it. Like… it’s on ME (the content sharer) to be compassionate about the preferences/needs of others … and to put safeguards around things that others might not feel comfortable with.

It’s not that hard… and it changes how you think about your role as part of a community.❤️

There are two very different #UX observations about #mastodon:

1. Friction
The many UX problems that everyone likes to whine about

2. Value
That people are FLOCKING here in spite of this friction!

Stop missing the forest from the trees. In my career when people used a product with bad UX you *knew* you had a great product as it actually solved a need that was worth overcoming the problems.

Should we fix the UX problems? Of course! But this is a great place to start.

Did you know that if you capitalize each word in a multi-word hashtag, #ScreenReaders can read them as words, but if you leave them lowercase, they can't? Well, now you know! So, for #accessibility, please capitalize words when there's more than one in a hashtag.

@ehattswank @maxkennerly @Diggler67 I think it would be cool if the “content wrapper” approach were used liberally for almost anything beyond short texts with no clear bin. Then you’d see lots of headlines neatly displayed and could choose to open them based on current mood and whims at least as much as on default preferences.
I #retired about 8 months ago. On the Top 10 list of perks: Going to the #cinema for an afternoon #movie and avoiding the weekend crowds. About to see #bansheesofinisherin.
@maxkennerly @Diggler67 This is a good approach but it seems a bit confusing to me. What qualifies as "aimed at a general audience"? Why is political stuff singled out? I understand hiding sensitive/disturbing content, of course, but it seems like a lot of this is aiming to add CWs to posts that some folks might not be interested in. But wouldn't that basically include... everything? For example - if I want to post about yummy vegan food, should I CW that? Just trying to grasp the nuances.

TIP OF THE DAY

If your instance server is having a hard time right now, don't freak out.

You do not need to change servers. Mastodon is getting a huge influx of new users and they are all working tirelessly to add capacity. If you are otherwise happy with your instance, trust that they will get things working smoothly. Give them some time to sort things out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

@mathewi The implications of this drama are interesting. Like, does it mean that journalists, once onboarded, are incentivized to move into an instance that is related to a community/ interest area they write about?

Does it mean that some instances can pressure others into different moderation decisions?

The people that have been here for a while have probably dealt with these questions before, but I'm finding it interesting to think about.
