Wool Sower Wasp Galls
White Oak

A tiny wasp stings the stem and deposits eggs. The eggs command the tree to grow a specific structure that encases and protects the larvae. Inside the gall the larvae look like seeds packed side by side with fuzzy tails. The cycle takes two years to complete. Though strangely parasitic, it doesn’t hurt the trees.

Another wasp evolved an ovipositor to sting the larvae within the gall and deposit eggs on THEM. Parasites have parasites.

Opinions, please! In a retelling of Cinderella (yes, I'm aware it's been done a million times), should the stepsisters' foot mutilation be included or not? I keep vacillating. The retelling is geared to kids.

I love closing out the year with this. 😊

On December 31, 1995, exactly 27 years ago today, legendary cartoonist Bill Watterson published his final 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip.

How beautiful and appropriate it was, and a timeless reminder of what we have before us in 2023. ❀️

Happy New Year, ya'll!

Whatever you celebrate, I hope your heart is filled with light.
Merry Christmas and happy 8th night of Chanukah, for those who celebrate either of these

Finally got my tree up. Though, coming from an interfaith family, almost all the presents currently under it are for Chanukah. 😁

Would a picture of a baby elephant in the water for the very first time bring you some extra cheer today?! Ta da. πŸ€—

I just saw someone correct someone else: "That's not a bird. It's a duck."

So now I'm wondering what the "That's not an animal, it's a bird" folks think of ducks.

Question for a story:
Background: This world sees people & merfolk as separate. Humans are called people, but merfolk would be insulted to be called people.

What's a reasonable, gender-neutral synonym for merperson? Merfolk works for a plural but not singular. Mermaid and merman are both gendered, so don't work in this particular case.
