It's the Day of Selene / Luna's Day / #Monday! 🌛

"The Crab is said to have been put among the stars by the favour of Juno, because, when Hercules had stood firm against the Lernaean Hydra, it had snapped at his foot from the swamp. Hercules, enraged, had killed it, and Juno put it among the constellations."

Today in 1703, Tsar Peter the Great founded the city of St Petersburg in #Russia.

I'll have to write up a coin which was minted there, but in the meantime, here is a Russian coin minutes less than 50 years after the founding of St Petersburg, the 1749 Denga: https://coinofnote.com/russia-1-denga-1749/

The US mint has placed what it described as the last order of planchets for pennies, indenting to stop distributing the coin by early next year. Is this the end of one of the most highly minted modern coins?

Coins for the 80th anniversary of Victory Day issued in Kazakhstan with face values of 200 and 1,000 tenge.

The coins feature an eternal flame, symbolizing the memory of fallen heroes. The ornamental design on the number “80” represents the Victory ribbon and is stylized to echo elements of the Kazakh national flag.

Browsing the web for information on this fortnight's #MysteryCoin I stumbled across this from #TheOnion. Pretty sure it won't help you with the mystery coin, but it did give me a smile!

It's nearly (belated) #Newsletter time! To get it first, sign up now! https://coinofnote.com/newsletter/

And get your last minute guesses as to the #MysteryCoin in!

I know I've given you "anepigraphic" coins (only images, no text visible) before. But, I'm sure I've never challenged you with a coin which ONLY had text!

I suspect people will either instantly know it, or not. If you do, please let us know!

What do Yuri Gagarin and I have in common? We have both been given medals for impeccable service. We got ours for very different reasons, from very different sources, but that's neither here nor there.

(I buy captured Russian gear through a specific source to support Ukraine. Occasionally they'll include something extra. I assume it's stuff they couldn't sell.)
