Not too many guesses for this fortnight's #MysteryCoin. If you can't tell me the country.... Can you tell me what "unicef" is perhaps?

The #Newsletter will be out soon, so do subscribe if you haven't already to be the first to read the answer: https://coinofnote.com/newsletter/

Today is the 100th Birthday of naturalist and broadcaster, Sir David Attenborough: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Attenborough

I think we've likely all seen at least some of the well over 100 documentaries he has made and hopefully appreciate the planet we live on and the amazing variety of life we share it with that little bit more because of the knowledge he has shared.

Here is a 2019 £2 coin featuring the Royal Research Ship (RRS) named in his honour. Image of the coin from Numista:

And another book for Asian coin collectors: "A GUIDE TO THE ATTRIBUTION OF THE MORE COMMON TENPO TSUHO". This is a fascinating coin I barely touched on in one of the very first articles on the Coin of Note site: https://coinofnote.com/japan-100-mon/

So I should get myself a copy of this book and expand my knowledge on the subject as well! More on the book here: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n18.html#article3

Michael Zachary has published an updated, second edition of the Ten Cash Commentary book. I have the first edition of this and it is excellent. I now have the second edition in my Amazon cart :) If you are interested in early machine minted Chinese coins, this is an excellent resource. He also has one on the twenty cash coins.

Minted in Troy in the third century B.C.E., the object might have been buried as a gift to the dead. Archaeologists don’t know exactly how it ended up in modern-day Germany

Today is the 30th anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre, the deadliest mass shooting in Australia in modern times. Importantly, the deaths of 35 people and wounding of another 23 led to fundamental changes in gun laws in Australia. This is something we dearly wish our friends in the USA would also learn from.

Port Arthur is a tourist town in Tasmania, home to a former penal colony.

In 2007, the Perth Mint issued a series of commemorative 1oz silver coins called "Discover Australia". While I don't have them, here is the Port Arthur coin from Numista.

One thing I love about #Coins is the range of things you can learn about the world. At times, they can be keepers of knowledge which might otherwise be lost. This week's E-Sylum has an article about the extinct plant silphium on coins: https://www.coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n17.html#article20

Used for contraception and abortion, medicine, food seasoning, perfume and as a livestock improver, its special properties made this herb one of the most precious commodities in Graeco-Roman antiquity.

Then, one day, it went extinct.

I'm not 100% sure on the exact coin, but there are a few picturing the plant: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=silphium

'Dad had a gun under his pillow': The story of how the largest collection of medieval coins was found

The Fishpool Hoard - consisting of more than 1,200 coins - was uncovered more than 60 years ago.

Someone read my post on the NCB Rawdon coal mine check: https://coinofnote.com/n-c-b-rawdon-check-uk/

They asked if I could find any info on Denis Cook who was a foreman there. Do any of my followers happen to have any contacts who might have any info I can pass on please?

Today is #ANZAC day, the 25th April. On this day, 111 years ago, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli. A relatively minor (and disastrous) campaign for British forces, but the first big battle Australia & New Zealand were involved in as nations. As such, it is a somberly commemorated event each year.

Lest we forget.

While I haven't written up a coin confirmed to be related to the battle, I do have a 1902-10 penny turned into "art". Possibly trench art? Possibly just done by someone before or after the war, but either way, still an interesting piece: https://coinofnote.com/1902-10-uk-penny-art/
