I'm not salty or anything, and I don't live in America anymore - but I absolutely checked a couple major cybersecurity events with rotating venues because surely by now in 2026, they must have moved to places safe for women and trans attendees, surely, surely, surely,

nah of course not

In this year of 2026 if you absolutely have to run your mobile, international event in America - and you choose to run it in Texas, Tennessee, or Florida, that is certainly a choice that reflects which of your members or employees you see as human.
Just looking out.
@hacks4pancakes The United States decided to become untenable. That isn't your fault.
@hacks4pancakes do they see any as human?
Brought to you by many planning meetings at work talking about "assigning a resource to work on the task".
@viq @hacks4pancakes yep that bit of routine dehumanisation makes me see red...
@viq @hacks4pancakes oh the resource lingo grates on my nerves fiercely
@hacks4pancakes indiana feels like it also does a lot christo nationalist stanning
@hacks4pancakes 100% agree. The thing is, especially now that ice is patrolling airports, it’s not even safe to travel out of the US for folks whose ancestors didn’t arrive via the Mayflower. Just going to an airport puts you at risk. It’s simply not a good time for conferences if you’re traveling into/out of/around the US.
@leathekd no, there's no good airport in the us right now
@hacks4pancakes and some employers here in Europe are *still* sending people to the U.S. for conferences or remote (remote being the U.S.) site visits. @leathekd
@chillicampari @hacks4pancakes @leathekd $employer offered me to visit Defcon&Blackhat this year. While I really appreciate the gesture it’s a hard no from me.

@hacks4pancakes Though running an international event anywhere in the USA is also a case of "certainly a choice"
@hacks4pancakes I do my best to avoid any conferences in America where possible. And if I do go, I always have my passport with me in case "papers please." Nice place, great people. The best people. Freedom like you've never seen before. (edit: and I'm not even a targeted demo, so I can only imagine the anxiety and fear of someone who is part of a marginalized group) FFS people, have your conferences in a proper country like Canada.
@hacks4pancakes posit::conf comes to mind here - boycotting this year
@hacks4pancakes You should add Kansas to that list with their bullshit anti-trans license laws.
@XenoPhage there are like 22 fairly, just picked popular ones
@hacks4pancakes I guess at least there's some honesty finally and everyone can see them for who they are. Nobody should now be in any doubt about the fact that previously, at best, they were merely pretending to care about the marginalised-and-otherwise-at-risk.

@hacks4pancakes

IMO, anyone having a "cyber security" event in those places is just having a "fascism back door" event

@hacks4pancakes Cue the "But we've always done event xyz in loction abc!" people coming out of the woods...
@hacks4pancakes Almost every tech event I'm invited to in my field is in Florida, except one that was in Louisiana...
@hacks4pancakes I would like this in the form of a meme and/or T-shirt and/or post-card I can send.

@hacks4pancakes I cannot believe my country, once one of the safest places for an international event, has turned into one of the most dangerous ones. Roving masked thugs armed to the teeth and with virtually no training and massive amounts of authority to do dastardly things.

And a good 1/3 of my fellow citizens believe it is not only OK, but great. šŸ¤¦šŸ½ šŸ’”

@RegGuy

I'm sorry, but when was the US one of the safest places for an international conference?

Presumably, that would be after all of Europe, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, etc.

@hacks4pancakes

Yeah, it's not the ONLY place, but come on, it was very safe. Indeed, a place millions sought refuge. I'm sorry we've become a fascist state run by a lunatic and his syncophantic cult of GOP apologists.
@RegGuy always been a fascist state.. from the KKK to internment camps for the Japanese during WW2 to the feds assassinating civil rights leaders to the war on drugs to this
@valpackett Bullshit. Just as social security doesn't make the US socialist.
@hacks4pancakes
I see that the mathematicians are boycotting the International Congress, you know the one they have every four years and hand out Fields medals at, unless they shift it out of the States.
@hacks4pancakes FOSSY 2026 is happening in Vancouver, Canada, for starters.

@hacks4pancakes And yet those of us in Europe are being peppered with adverts with:

"Would you like to live and work in the USA?"

"Visit California/Florida for a holiday of a lifetime..."

Meanwhile, we're all reading newspaper reports of our citizens being detained for weeks at a time, without access to legal representation or communication with their families ... DESPITE having all the correct documentation for travel within the US.

So, um, no. Thanks, but very much no.

@hacks4pancakes The last company I was with put on a company summit in Florida last July, despite some internal objections. 😬
Chuck Darwin (@[email protected])

Mathematicians are threatening to boycott the field’s largest, most prestigious gathering this summer if it takes place in the U.S., as currently planned. Every four years since the turn of the twentieth century, the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) has brought together mathematicians from all over the world to share the latest breakthroughs and plot the field’s future. Famous speeches delivered at the congress have gone on to redefine entire subfields of math. The ICM is also where math’s most hallowed prize, the Fields Medal, is awarded. This July, the ICM is slated to take place in Philadelphia —the first time in 40 years that it’s been held in the U.S. Now a petition to move the event elsewhere is circulating among mathematicians. It cites the recent American military actions in Venezuela and Iran, the suspension of visas from 75 countries and the continued presence of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents across major U.S. cities as contrary to the ICM’s goal of fostering ā€œa sense of international unity amongst mathematicians.ā€ As of this writing, more than 1,500 mathematicians have signed the petition, which states that they plan to boycott the event if it isn’t moved outside the U.S. The list of signatories includes many of the field’s most prominent names, more than 50 of whom have spoken at previous congresses. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-mathematicians-are-boycotting-their-biggest-conference/

@hacks4pancakes "Eh, didn't affect anyone I asked so figured it was okay."
@hacks4pancakes security just panders to techbros now, don'tcha know?

@hacks4pancakes

I work at a bank and FS-ISAC's Spring Summit at the beginning of the month was in Florida so... nope. My coworkers have said they would stand up for me but I'm not risking that nor am I going to put that on them.

The one before that was New Orleans, before that Atlanta.

The response when I ask is usually either "we booked this years in advance", "that's where we get the best rates", "other cities can't meet our needs", or, my favorite, "nobody else has brought it up". Have you heard of Chicago? San Francisco? Also, nobody should have to tell you about it. Do you watch the news or check social media or pay attention to anything? Do you care about people who aren't able-bodied, cisgender, heterosexual, or white? Do you have a team of people who plan these things out or do you just randomly pick a spot based on cost savings and vibes?

@jrdepriest @hacks4pancakes

"It is not a problem for me, so it is not a problem."

Lather, rinse, repeat.

@jrdepriest @hacks4pancakes I'm a white cishet male, even a Christian (don't judge, I'm not a US Domesday evangelical and just want people to be nicer to people that are different, like Christ did it).
I won't travel to the US at the moment.

I want to. I want to meet old friends, see new places, enjoy the chance meetings in pubs. The current politics (worldwide) make me angry, they took from me what I experienced after the cold war: the world getting so much closer and friendlier.

@drchaos @hacks4pancakes

US Evangelical Christianity is not what most of the world would consider "Christ-like".

Thanks for appropriately distancing yourself from it. More people should lead with that.

@jrdepriest @hacks4pancakes I actually do know a few counterexamples and they are pretty pissed off (dude is 80 years old and would not mind me using strong words - he would never) at what counts as Christian. The guy is even a priest. And a great musician. And a good human and friend.
@hacks4pancakes perhaps we start a new one?
@mtor to be fair I did
@hacks4pancakes apologies, I was unaware that you had.
@hacks4pancakes I’m with you. These decisions for them are all based upon money. The places you mention are always the cheapest option. I avoid them now too. Sent by a human with a residence in California who’s currently in Europe. 🄰
@hacks4pancakes For certain people's the USA has always been sketch. This time, this administration, this attitude, has been a way of life since the founding. My hope is that the world can influence this country, my country, to finally look at itself and do the right thing.
