(He / Him) 'The Fixer of things'

Gen-X IT Nerd, who likes tinkering with small computers, regular-sized bicycles, playing video (and latterly tabletop) games and learning interesting things. What is 'interesting' changes on a daily basis. macOS and Linux user but tries not to be an insufferable c-word about it. Showing me Windows might make me grumpy though.

Took it to heart when someone told me "Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional".

Bashing #Apple ... number 473 in a series.

Why, oh why, does macOS only enable HiDPI mode for certain monitors?

I recently bought one of those cheap portable monitors to use when I'm away, and connecting to my MacBook it looks great at native resolution (but it's 2560x1600 so text is too tiny!) and the other resolution is 1280x800 ... which looks good but modern apps assume larger real-estate, so it's not usable.

Switching to other mods left a blurry mess ... until, the BetterDisplay app! Which, for the most part, I'm just using to enable HiDPI mode on the display... and now it looks great at 1600x1000!

Why can't i do this without a third-party app?

Of course, if I was really some sort of guru... I'd have suggested Nvidia.

2010 - Today
£1,000 = £744,522!!

By way of comparison, investing £1,000 in a fund focused solely on the FTSE100 companies back in 2010, would be worth £1,685 today.

Insomnia does terrible things.

I ran out of things to read so I ended up checking out the stock markets... (the Dow, the Dow right now... I don't know why you're laughing...) and remembered a conversation I had with a friend back in 2010 sometime... at the time they were paying for a course on day trading and I was sure it was a scam. I remember telling them "if I had any money right now..." (which I didn't, sadly) ... "I'd just buy as much APPL stock as I could..." ... I can't recall why in particular I reckoned this was a good idea, but it had the iPhone 4 on the market and the App Store had been out for a couple of years ... I'd probably seen something cool on their WWDC keynote or something.

Anyways, if I'd bought £1,000 of APPL back then, it would now be worth almost £27,500 ...

I should listen to myself more often.

Childhood is idolizing Batman. Adolescence is when Joker starts to make sense. Adulthood is realizing Commissioner Gordon doesn’t get paid enough to deal with their crap.

So, a few days ago I found this amazing website that shows a massive amount of detail about the electricity generation for each country... and whilst it's blowing a literal gale outside, I thought I'd check in.

Right now, the UK is meeting 73% of it's electricity requirements from renewable sources...

HOWEVER...

We are still apparently paying Drax to burn biomass and we're paying someone to burn gas... EVEN THOUGH... we are only using 64% of our available installed wind farm capacity.

This means we are likely also paying those windfarms to sit idle / run at reduced capacity.

This is all madness. We have the generation capacity, I'm guessing that where it fails is in grid connection capacity... this needs to be prioritised.

My biggest problem with the concept of LLMs, even if they weren’t a giant plagiarism laundering machine and disaster for the environment, is that they introduce so much unpredictability into computing. I became a professional computer toucher because they do exactly what you tell them to. Not always what you wanted, but exactly what you asked for.

LLMs turn that upside down. They turn a very autistic do-what-you-say, say-what-you-mean commmunication style with the machine into a neurotypical conversation talking around the issue, but never directly addressing the substance of problem.

In any conversation I have with a person, I’m modeling their understanding of the topic at hand, trying to tailor my communication style to their needs. The same applies to programming languages and frameworks. If you work with a language the way its author intended it goes a lot easier.

But LLMs don’t have an understanding of the conversation. There is no intent. It’s just a mostly-likely-next-word generator on steroids. You’re trying to give directions to a lossily compressed copy of the entire works of human writing. There is no mind to model, and no predictability to the output.

If I wanted to spend my time communicating in a superficial, neurotypical style my autistic ass certainly wouldn’t have gone into computering. LLMs are the final act of the finance bros and capitalists wrestling modern technology away from the technically literate proletariat who built it.

You are being manipulated.

I feel I'm coming up against #Apple and their tactic of forcing upgrades... my Mac now only unlocks using TouchID or my Watch about 40% of the time, forcing me to use my password like a heathen the rest of the time.

I won't go to #macos #Tahoe, glass sucks bad enough on my phone / tablet, I don't want it on my computer as well.

Had our council tax notice for the coming year.

Apparently, by law the max they can increase it by without special measures is 5% … our county council are a Reform majority council, and it’s going up by 4.9% …

So much for Reform lowering taxes.
