(He / Him) 'The Fixer of things'

Gen-X IT Nerd, who likes tinkering with small computers, regular-sized bicycles, playing video (and latterly tabletop) games and learning interesting things. What is 'interesting' changes on a daily basis. Runs Linux but tries not to be an insufferable c-word about it.

Took it to heart when someone told me "Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional".

Why does my new electric toothbrush (same manufacturer and equivalent model) feel more like a sex toy than a toothbrush??

Shiny, black, smooth ... whereas the old one had ergonomic touches like a grippy bit, and a contour where your hand held it.

Also, they've changed from having little coloured rings on the head so you could them apart if your partner had the same toothbrush (which we do, special offer on a two pack, but only available in black!?)... to a tiny white emoji printed on it ... which (at my advanced years) I cannot see without glasses.

Massive usability fail. Sort it out OralB.

Just saw this today - I only use #Google #Chrome on my #SteamDeck for 'web apps', since you could add them to #Steam on Kiosk mode etc. making them super suitable as non-Steam apps on the gaming interface. No adblocker makes it quite useless tho for some sites - does #Firefox really not support an equivalent to this already?

run --branch=stable --arch=x86_64 --command=/app/bin/chrome --file-forwarding com.google.Chrome @@u @@ --window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.google.com"
---

Update: Ooo, maybe it is possible. Will test this out.

Update 2: It is possible - 'under the hood' it's not an exact 1:1 replacement and does require a lil more tinkering compared to Chrome/
#Chromium... but it works and superficially, it's the same.

Added the simple guide on how to do so on my
#Linux Wiki.

Personally, I’m getting tired of “TARIFFS!” … “No tariffs, we’re all friends” … “NO LONGER FRENDS, MOAR TARIFFS!” … “j/k … no tari - WUT!!! TARIIIIIFFFFFFFFFFFSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!”

Just fuck off, see you in four years… maybe.

Now, Starmer, go back to Brussels, tell them we’re really sorry and ask nicely if we can be in their club again. If Farage froths at the mouth, just deny him entry when he comes back from whichever authoritarian he licking the arse of this week. Tell him we’re controlling our borders and preventing the spread of stupidity.

I spent an hour or two rearranging the home screens on my #iPad Pro the other day… and I find myself reaching for it a lot more as a result… a lot tidier and less clutter make it more pleasant to use and a judicious smattering of home screen widgets help to make it really useful.

Along with a few key apps #Ivory, #shellfish, #workingcopy, #wireguard, adding home screen icons for my most used web apps and it’s become quite productive again.

I just need to find a sensibly priced replacement for #screens … they’ve gone subscription and while I tend to buy lifetime licenses for a lot of my apps, I’m not sure it’s worth $129 to me, I only really use it in emergencies… especially as I’m reckoning that that will be a lifetime licenses for Screens5 … Screens6 will probably be a different product and therefore a different license. Anyone have any recommendations for an app that can do VNC AND Apple Remote Desktop (ideally with curtain support and all the other goodness) … if it can also do RDP then all the better.

I’m still on the 2018 11” iPad Pro, and it’s working really well… looks like it’ll be supported for #iOS26 as well, which is pretty crazy.

Anyone using the community.general.onepassword lookup function in #ansible ??

I've been revisiting some playbooks on my local Mac and found that, despite having a working #1Password app and working 1Password CLI ... it's returning blank values no matter what I search for. Exact same behaviour on a Fedora laptop I have, so don't think it's my Mac at fault?

Weirdly, if I use community.general.onepassword_ssh_key ... this will return keys from my vault, but I can't get secrets.

The op binary works at the command line just fine (op read op://Vault/Secret/Reference etc etc ).

And even more weirdly, on a work device running Windows (and a really old version of the 1Password apps) the onepassword lookup just works.

Suggestions and retoots appreciated.

There should be international standards introduced and enforced for things like cereal packaging and condiments bottles.

Standardised dimensions and weights/measurements will allow consumers to made fairer value comparisons without resorting to differential equations and we can then design cupboard and fridge shelving that fit all the bloody bottles and maximise space.

Yes, my new ketchup bottle is two centimetres taller than its predecessor and will not stand up on my fridge shelf without me rearranging the entire internal layout of the fridge, whilst offering roughly the same internal volume, why do you ask?

I think what the events of the last few years, regarding Thames Water, are showing us is that new corporate rules are required.

The company has been stripped bear of everything of value, it's been loaded with debt and its management have been richly rewarded for what should be seen as incompetence. They are failing their statutory and moral requirements, they are failing their customers and the environment.

The "investors" (looter's and pillagers seems more appropriate) should be penalised. Nationalise the company, wipe out the debt, jail the CEO.

Is that difficult? Yes. Is that likely to cause everyday folks pain? Yes. Is a deterrent like that really required? Yes.

Because right now a lot of firms are doing this, and soon all of them will be.
