Hello #fediverse
Just landed #here and still figuring things out!
Thank you for the recommendation Darth π
Welcome Ben! There is lots of help for new people on the website at https://fedi.tips and please feel free to ask if you want help with anything specific π
By the way, here's a guide to all the ways of discovering accounts to follow: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accounts-to-follow-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-how-do-i-find-my-friends/
@darth_hideout @bb2101 @FediTips
I was going to say fedi tips also!

I'd suggest few to no hashtags in the middle of the text.
Hashtags for visibility best in a separate line at the end.
@project1enigma @bb2101 @FediTips
π―
Any single line of hashtags at the very end of a toot, with a blank line above, gets collapsed into a small, separate tag list.
I personally don't especially care about the especially collapsed display. Just that interspersed hashtags make things nearly unreadable for me sometimes.
Think normal text (white on black for me), with dark blue on black words interspersed (i.e. too low contrast).
@project1enigma
Putting hashtags in text is brutal for those who rely on screen readers. They prefer to have the option to avoid reading the hashtags at the bottom.
You might want to try a different browser UI or app option if youβre not finding the hashtags readable at the bottom. In my case, my instance offers additional UIs in a variety of themes, and the hashtags at the bottom are in bubbles.
@waffelhard @darth_hideout @bb2101 @FediTips
If you care about readers/accessibility, you might still want to respect the point of doing none or nearly none in running text. Regardless of other preferences like aesthetics.
@project1enigma @waffelhard @bb2101 @FediTips
Agreed.
Some ppl will block you for not filling out your profile if you follow them. Others for too many tags in your post. Or not enough. Or using the wrong tags. Or.... π€·
And have we mentioned alt text? Content warnings?
What makes me laugh is how many reply threads from real ppl there are to a simple, "Hello, World" post.
Welcome to the Fediverse! lol

Good news is Mastodon has mute, block and filters, so those annoying people who tell you how to use Mastodon.
Btw welcome!

@bb2101 @haubles Welcome to Mastodon Ben!

Highly highly recommend George Penney (tagged) who (sorry, George! Edit: which to who) writes the smiliest toots from Aotearoa, New Zealand.
@bb2101 Hey Ben, welcome.
If you haven't encountered it yet, check out https://newsmast.community/about
It's a great way to find accounts and posts with a variety of different focuses. It's also a good reason to get into lists, so you don't get overwhelmed. You can decide what sort of topics you want to visit and focus on them based on your current mood and inclination.
Yeah, ya oughta follow @dgar for the dad jokes and the occasional tune. Like this one...
