Thank you for the recommendation Darth π
Welcome Ben! There is lots of help for new people on the website at https://fedi.tips and please feel free to ask if you want help with anything specific π
By the way, here's a guide to all the ways of discovering accounts to follow: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accounts-to-follow-on-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-how-do-i-find-my-friends/

I'd suggest few to no hashtags in the middle of the text.
Hashtags for visibility best in a separate line at the end.

Any single line of hashtags at the very end of a toot, with a blank line above, gets collapsed into a small, separate tag list.
I personally don't especially care about the especially collapsed display. Just that interspersed hashtags make things nearly unreadable for me sometimes.
Think normal text (white on black for me), with dark blue on black words interspersed (i.e. too low contrast).

Putting hashtags in text is brutal for those who rely on screen readers. They prefer to have the option to avoid reading the hashtags at the bottom.
You might want to try a different browser UI or app option if youβre not finding the hashtags readable at the bottom. In my case, my instance offers additional UIs in a variety of themes, and the hashtags at the bottom are in bubbles.

If you care about readers/accessibility, you might still want to respect the point of doing none or nearly none in running text. Regardless of other preferences like aesthetics.
