Our society is monumentally, absurdly, sometimes obscenely productive. We make so much *stuff* together that no one ever really need go hungry or cold or unclothed.
But satisfying people’s needs efficiently isn’t really profitable; it’s hard to make money off people who already have what they need. So our society also makes sure that, even though we have more than enough stuff and the means to make even more, people never really have enough.
We bulldoze edible food into the ground or pour bleach on it in dumpsters. We burn warehouses’ worth of unsold designer clothing and crush unsold electronics. Plenty is always almost within reach, but, for most people, must be kept out of reach.
