one of my favorite things on fedi is seeing an enormous infodump that is almost totally incomprehensible to me, where someone is just pouring out their heart about a topic that they love, in some gigantic thread of intense nerdery. sometimes I see people post self-consciously as if they feel like they shouldn't be filling up people's timelines with their special interest but I just want to say as a blanket statement, go for it. even if I can't quite understand the facts, the energy is sublime
thank you to everyone who faved/boosted this, this week has been A LOT and sometimes it feels like the only things that people listen to are cries of anguish. a real W for fedi that by far my most engagement was on something positive and encouraging (even if it was admittedly a bit anodyne)
@glyph Shame should be rooted out of society like it's a disease, too many people go silent about their passions when we should be dancing and celebrating our immense capacity for understanding & creativity
@ctwebb I agree with the sentiment, but the problem with phrasing this as 'shame' is that there a great many people who ought to be *far* more ashamed than they are, but about real harm they're doing, and a lot of them are like, in charge of the country. But "shame" over inconsequential social awkwardness, over being one's true self without harming anyone else? of course that should be eradicated.
@ctwebb @glyph I get your sentiment, but _some folx_ don't feel enough shame, if you know what I mean. It's an important informative biological response for social harmony. But us supporting each other's passions - that we can do, today :)
@hostia @glyph definitely ๐Ÿ’ฏ
@glyph HEARTILY agree. Deep knowledge posts about esoterica just have excellent vibes. Sometimes I even learn something and then I get to feel smarter into the bargain.

@glyph

I am here for the truth and beauty of people's ornate passions, and also for their simple quiet comradery of sharing the everyday.

Thank you, everyone!

@glyph I agree! I love the passion, the knowledge and the infodumps here. I'm thrilled when I come across discussions far outside my expertise. What a joy and a privilege to get to eavesdrop on all these brilliant people.

@glyph So much YES to this, a mere RT did not do it justice. So:

Yes. Yes. Yes.

@glyph Indeed. I love it when people treat mastodon as their personal notebook where they jot down short ideas, note what happened to themselves, or write about their plans or memories. In a way, it extends my life by their experiences.

@glyph

Thus spaketh John Mastodon ๐Ÿ‘

@glyph

It's definitely one of the best features. ๐Ÿ˜

@glyph

Thatโ€™s my second-favourite thing here. My favourite are the comments underneath from other people breaking down the parts that required context most readers were missing, which let me understand the original post.

@glyph
I love it.
Love to learn new things; admire the knowledge and abilities even if I barely understand the toots.
I follow some mathmos, and I'm so happy that someone understands that stuff, but it ain't me. Looks decorative, though.
As for the toots of makerfolk and crafters - oh joyous delight!
@glyph I agree. I especially love the long threads from hackers / tinkerers (i.e @foone) that share bit by bit as they explore or learn. In a world that feels 90% scripted and "polished for presentation" this kinda thing is refreshing.
@glyph That's what this place is FOR. ๐ŸŽ‰
@glyph public rubber ducking by passionate users on fedi is top notch to see it happen! ๐Ÿ’™

@glyph I've posted about my interests a few times on Mastodon, but (in general) I mainly use social media to comment on others' posts rather than making original ones myself.

That said, a few months ago, I did launch a channel on Telegram where I can put all my numismatic-related discussions in one place. If anyone is interested in seeing it: https://t.me/IntaglioMoneyMusings

๐Ÿฒ Intaglio's Money Musings ๐Ÿ’ต

We think that we think about money all the time, but how often do we really look at the actual physical cash?

@Intaglio_Dragon
Mostly same, but when I find myself typing an elaborate answer toot I now take the little extra time to format into something that makes sense stand-alone and add tags and mark it public. People seem to find and appreciate those every now and then.
@glyph
@glyph literally tho thats the best part abt a friend on the spectrum. getting them to infodump abt the things that make them light up
@glyph nothing makes me happier than listening to someone who is passionate and really knows their stuff. I bask in that warmth.
@glyph Let me put it this way: I have almost zero interest in WWE. I love the "Sidewalk Slam" podcast from @LoadingReadyRun. It's like the topic doesn't really matter. I just love listening to people go on and on about something they enjoy, even if it's not something that I personally enjoy.

@glyph As a caveman brain, on a relatively low scale, seeing what others can do in their sleep that goes straight over my head, I happily invite that useless info dump onto my timelines. Sometimes I share them outside of this place with others who might understand it better.

@glyph My feelings precisely.

It's one of the many reasons I fell in love with this "place" and never left.

I honestly haven't been inspired like this since the mailing lists of old!

@feoh @glyph - So very true. It is (as others have assuredly said) "A community".
@glyph
I had a dream in which there was something like a cross between the fediverse and a wiki specifically for this that allowed for long and article form posts and one of the main instances on it was at braindump.nya
It was catgirl themed of course and also hosted the Cat and Mouse Game which was basically a functional ARG campaign to protect this from being abused by clankers trying to connect it to AI garbage

@glyph And even when it is a topic I dislike or have no bandwidth to read at that point, it is so easy to scroll past (maybe with a bookmark first).

I love that there is no algorithm deciding for me whether I sound be seeing this or not.

@glyph these are my favourite type of people!

Of course I want to know all about a random thing my friend just learnt, or what they work on in their spare time - not because it's one of my special interests, but because I love seeing them light up and talk about things they are interested in.

I have a friend who apologises for talking too much about stuff they care about... but if I didn't want to listen, I wouldn't keep asking questions to let them continue talking about it
