America will have its own Gulag Archipelago. Twenty-three concentration camps will soon come online, unless, together, we can find and pull the political handbrake.

"Without concentration camps, without the undefined fear they inspire and the very well-defined training they offer in totalitarian domination, which can nowhere else be tested with all of its most radical possibilities, a totalitarian state can neither inspire its nuclear troops with fanaticism nor maintain a whole people in complete apathy."
--Hannah Arendt, "Totalitarianism in Power"
ICE will pursue these projects quietly whenever possible.
ICE will obfuscate and sow misinformation to frustrate inquiry.
ICE will not alert community leaders where new detention facilities are being planned and constructed.
ICE will endeavor to fill every bed in these new camps. Tens of thousands of "beds."
Once built, the gears of these camps must turn with maximum efficiency and therefore with built-in inhumanity.

At least 20 communities with large warehouses across the U.S. have become stealth targets for Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s $45-billion expansion of detention centers. Communities are objecting to mass detentions and raising concerns that the facilities could strain water supplies and other services while reducing local tax revenue. In many cases, mayors, county commissioners, governors and members of Congress learned about ICE’s ambitions only after the agency bought or leased space for detainees. That's led to shock and frustration even in areas that have backed President Donald Trump. This is happening as public support for ICE and Trump's immigration crackdown sags.
AP is not progressive anything. AP is a coop of billionaire owned news stations and billionaire owned newspapers.
fortunately ICE is not very good at capacity planning. They will end up buying these properties, then realize that the infrastructure (roads, electrical supply, water supply, personnel) are not available to support the intended use. Finally they will sell these properties at a loss. Our tax dollars "at work".
If you're in a community and discover a sale, lobby the town to put a toll on the road to the warehouse, apply additional water, sewer, or real estate taxes to help "defray" the extra cost before they figure out it's not feasible. At a minimum your town should get back more that what ICE puts into the effort.
You fight back by making the effort too expensive to support
If these purchases prove to be merely wasteful, that will likely be the best possible outcome.
I don’t share all your optimism about MAGA/ICE incompetence. In fact, the inability to do deep planning is part of what makes these sites so dangerous, imo.
Americans are not uniquely immoral, even if they live in a uniquely toxic culture.
There is real resistance work being done, and, as we have witnessed in other times and places, it may not be enough to stem the tide of barbarism.
Employing imaginary resources.
Don't miss the devil in the details:

#trump is #hitler reincarnated.
Already war crimes, already concentration camps, deportations.
What else? I will not suggest.
More important,
where will the updated #neuremberg take place
when it all ends?
Trump may escape, but the cohort will be brought to justice.

@xankarn Apparently this is some new use of the word "deporting" that I had not previously encountered...
:(
@xankarn It's worth noting that the site they're looking at here in New Hampshire is in a region with *enormous* PFAS contamination that has made the ground water toxic.
In broad daylight...
Definitely still up in the air. Merrimack is not pleased. Gov Ayotte is dancing around the issue.
Success in NH, with a Republican governor! Keep pushing, people!

@xankarn To the extent that indifference dogs our political footsteps, we have to get people to understand 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 situation in particular 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒕 and 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒏𝒐𝒕 be resolved without first getting Republicans out of office 𝙖𝙣𝙙 putting progressive Democrats into office 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮.
I think former Ambassador Susan Rice was right: we 𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 operate with a “forgive and forget” mentality, and so just electing “Democrats” is not going to be sufficient. In fact, I think we're screwed if we do.
23 🤨 🤔
Isn't that a fnord?
Now that i am thinking about it....
"Trump" has 5 letters...
Just sayin'
I fear that the US has long passed the point in that a political handbrake still exists.
The only way out will be Civil war.
And to be honest, from outside it looks like there is a civil war happening already but one party, that party being the average population, is refusing to see it is happening, while the other side, that being Maga and friends, are preparing for cosplaying 1933 Germany soon.
As a german this is horrifying to watch.
And the whole world is follwing suit.
@xankarn or just, IDK, fucking run over the guards and free those being #ForciblyDisappeared into those.
