@BuyFromEU
Would love to. How can I migrate to new device and buy apps on my phone without #Google?
Remember when #Microsoft got fined about only pushing one browser? Well, we are few years late with android lock-ins
@chicraote
I know they are on the market. 2 problems for me:
1. None of them has physical qwerty
2. Lot of apps do not work without gapps
Somehow I still do think #EU can do much more in this area. When IT company can get fined for pushing their own browser (which can be easily replaced), then locked in backup methods should also be penalised

You could jailbreak your phone. I'm too afraid to do mine but that's a solution.

I'll probably buy a pre-jailed one next time I think
@chicraote de-googled phones exist, but you still can't buy apps without a google identity and this makes a de-googled phone substantially less useful.
@chicraote I own and use a e/OS phone. I am not making theoretical statements.
I did not say "install". I said "buy". You cannot buy squeak without a google identity.
If I want the paid version of Flowx (an excellent weather app with real costs to talk to real servers with the weather data), I can't have it without a google identity. If I want the paid version of RealCal or GitSync, I can't have it without a google identity. Et multi cetera.
@chicraote I would prefer a system where there's "postal banking", strictly public banking services, and a phone to be legal for sale must support use of the postal bank for monetary transactions through which means you must be able to make any transaction you can make by any other means for no greater real cost than incurred by other means than using the postal bank.
(It's not obvious that for-profit banking is itself a tolerable situation.)
@raymaccarthy Yup. And that's difficult to distinguish from a de facto law requiring you to have a duopoly phone.
Which is not an appropriate stance for the public square which really ought to include "banking".

@bufalo1973 @BuyFromEU I do IronFox with Aurora and F-Droid .. stock android, unflashable phone.
Yet, migrating between devices is pain in the ass...
>> Remember when #Microsoft got fined about only pushing one browser? Well, we are few years late with #Google #android lock-ins
No surprises here, as some of the same people moved from Microsoft to Google and started playing the same dirty tricks that got Microsoft busted in the first place
Not only Google, but did you ever try to pry your friends away from Facebook? GOOD LUCK with that one too.
Yes another one is WhatsApp... Try to convince folk to use Signal instead....
And meanwhile TV companies/the Government etc etc use WhatsApp/Twitter etc etc
@BuyFromEU Yes! Me! On it! I installed Waterfox, but now unsure. Should I not use Ecosia anymore? As it does data harvesting and that's one of the reasons - I just don't want that. Better for the environment, better for my speed of use.
Transitioning to Mastodon and Pixelfed, away from Spotify, partly YT still, I did install PeerTube but contentwise it is lacking for now, on SoundCloud and BandCamp trying to get people to use/come there.
Thinking bout Android > Fdroid etc

A two panel cartoon.
Panel 1: A man asks, "Who hates being spied on?", and everyone raises their hand.
Panel 2: The man asks, "Who will stop using Google?", and everyone lowers their hand.
Use Brave and DuckDuckGo...
Or just pay for, and use #kagi
Could you explain, please?
So $0.02 of my monthly goes to RU (that we know of.) Low concern, but I'm looking into putting SearXNG on my home server. Thank you for alerting me and making me discover an alternative.
I'll point out the reason I'll leave #Kagi in March isn't the RU/Yandex thing.
It's the direct gaslighting of us customers in Vlad's reply.
It is EXACTLY the correct way to run a company by responding to customer concerns.
Too Musk-y for me, fuck right off Vlad.
Try edit today, add an #Alttext 🙃
@BuyFromEU The sad fact is that an average consumer will always use what's easy to get into, not what's morally or technically superior.
We are not selling this idea for technology enthusiasts who already understand the problem, but to a person who has absolutely no idea what these services even do technically, they're just the bright colored icon that let you do various things.
Then there's the whole matter of selling the idea that it's not good if you're being spied upon. My mom is a good example. She has various services on her tabled and she uses them daily, but she just won't understand what's bad about if a technology giant analyses all her communications. She will never be able to comprehend the core issue because it's all space magic when explained even with layman's terms.
Yet my mom is exactly the type that the campaigns to switch to European and trustworthy companies should be aimed for. It's however a tough sale to say she should start paying for them.
My biggest trouble is the AFAICT non-existent feature to filter results by dates or timeframes as per *my* needs:
The filter options given (last 24 hrs/last week/last month) are underwhelmingly limited.
Same (or worse) with Ecosia.
If there's a workaround I've missed, I'd be thankful to learn about it, TIA!
