I think something has gone very wrong with my addons on #firefox... if I search for a single quote on #kagi the tab will eat all my memory and crash the browser

(doesn't happen in a clean ff profile)

Better search results with no ads. Welcome to Kagi (pronounced kah-gee), a paid search engine that gives power back to the user.

Whenever I look for recipes online I feel the strong urge to post a rant very much like this, so I'm happy to share this instead as it saves me a ton of writing, and I'll just add a few thoughts of my own.

https://bruceblog.bearblog.dev/oncookingsites/

I'm not so much bothered by the flood of ads and videos as that can be easily fixed with an adblocker. What I can't wrap my head around is how Google very visibly makes the web a worse place, forcing people to fill it with tons of SEO bullshit to please Google's algorithm (if they care to be found that is). Recipe sites make this painfully visible. Every recipe these days comes with one or two pages of SEO bollocks you gotta skip through to get to the recipe. I assume they're mostly AI generated slop these days and I can't even blame them for saving themselves some work as no one's ever gonna read that shit anyways, besides Google's crawlers. The readers know it's bullshit, people even made browser add-ons that remove the garbage and/or extract/scrape the recipe part somehow. The creators know it's bullshit and you'll find a "jump to recipe" (or rather "skip the bullshit") button at the top of most recipe pages these days. Google (most likely) is aware that this is bullshit, however they have no urge whatsoever to improve their search as they know websites gotta cater to their crap algorithms if they want to exist. So instead of Google fixing it (which they easily could), everyone just plays along and finds their own ways to cope and work around Google, be it with browser add-ons or "skip the SEO trash that's here solely because Google demands it" buttons. It's just sad.

As for the rest of the post: amen!

PS: Thanks to @kagihq for their "small web", I most certainly would never have come across this post otherwise.

My favorite recipes are all over. Screenshots, pdfs, bookmarked links, written note cards. Its a mess. But I do this because, well... <div style="text-al...

@theowrites Would they be willing to pay for a subscription? I recently subscribed to #Kagi search, and I've found it to be far superior to any other search engine I've ever used, including #Google in its heyday. Ironically, the owner of Kagi is an AI enthusiast, and it does have AI features available, but in practice they're easier to ignore than the AI features of DuckDuckGo, which (as others have remarked) keeps trying to sneak AI back in.

Another tip is even simpler: don't have conversations with #LLMs. I've never spoken a word to an #LLM, except when a company refused to provide tech support any other way, and then only briefly.

Finally, stick to mobile devices as much as possible if they aren't willing to use Linux. As much as I hate Google, Android seems in practice to be less insistent than Microsoft Windows about forcing AI on its users.

Or try Linux on the desktop — modern user-friendly distributions like Ubuntu can just be USED, they don't need to be "learned" any more than MS Windows does. Perceptions to the contrary are due to selective bias. People think they "ought" to understand MS Windows because "everybody uses it", so when they have problems with it, they blame themselves. But when they have problems with Linux, they blame it on Linux.

To me the problem with #smolweb is that there's isn't a browser that applies these rules. #Dillo comes close, even though it needs a makeover.

Dillo also has an rdrview plugin, but you have to manually write rdrview: in front of the url in the url bar of every page to see the results.

A better solution would be a content filter, like a #smolweb plugin that filters the entire html page rejecting anything that doesn't pass the smolweb validator, or passing it to rdrview. Degrees of acceptance could be set in settings.

A dedicated browser wouldn't require searching for #smolweb / #smallweb / #indieweb blogs, sites, or articles. (There seems to be no such thing as a #smolweb search engine, although points for #wiby, #marginalia, #kagi and #mojeek).

Just point the browser to any web site and if it borks, display the "errors" or ignore it with a 418 I'm a teapot error: after all it's the web site author's responsibility to provide clean, readable web sites.

Imagine a world where this plugin would be as ubiquitous as ublock-origin, it could even change web site development.

This is fast becoming the year of paying for quality with my modest amounts of money instead of paying for useless ads with enormous amounts of personal data.
