My god, this is Getty #photojournalist John Abernathy. He wrote on instagram “I was tackled by #ICE agents & surrounded by about 50 #border #police. Just for taking photos. I tossed my camera to another Photographer to make sure it wouldn't be confiscated. #gettyreportage #getty at the #Whipple Federal building in #Minneapolis.”

Follow up on #Getty #photojournalist John Abernathy…

He later posted this image of his camera sitting on top of what appears to be a court date notice. The caption is very cryptic, but from the picture I infer his camera survived & he was in fact arrested. No word on whether he had any injuries, though at a minimum I’d expect bruises. An absolutely #unconstitutional #arrest.

@Nonilex

that is a nice camera! A true photographer at heart!

@Nonilex by "bruises" you mean "internal bleeding," right? Got to make sure we use the correct medical terms or CBS might turn down the story.

I bet ICE made sure he he had the same quality medical care for his "internal bleeding" as their murderer did.

@Nonilex he tossed a leica? bold move!

@Nonilex John Abernathy on bsky: "I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye."

In WW2, the company famously "transferred" Jewish employees to their offices outside of Germany, gave them a camera & a new job. The Leica Freedom Train.

Bluesky Social
@CA7746 @Nonilex I'm finding some cognitive 'discomfort' that the victim writes on Bluesky and (I understand) Instagram.... Just seems ... dunno... like a sort of "blind spot" on their part. I mean: do they also support Twitter as well?
It's strange that in general there's a tendency to keep supporting the very institutions we identify as having questionable values.

@CA7746 @Nonilex

I didn't know about the Leica Freedom Train. Thank you so much for sharing that! A bit of brightness shining through all the gloom.

@Nonilex this reminds me of watching the 1968 Chicago police riots on TV, and a couple scenes remind me of watching the evacuation of the ghetto in Schindler‘s List. Ironically, the ice recruitment ads said these people would be protecting our “culture“. They have no shame.
@Nonilex it is time that journalists and citizens start suing the department of homeland security. Demand trump size damages. Go for $ 5 billion for assault and trauma.

@Nonilex to be clear, the people #protesting #ice are not terrorists, but the federal governments response to protestors is exactly how you create terrorist organizations. Something the US government has a lot of experience doing in many parts of the world.

An empire in decline turns inward

This will end badly if something doesn’t change. I have zero faith in the #democrats and the #supremecourt and most Americans are too self absorbed and or financially stressed for #generalstrike

@woodenmachines A crucial part of full oppression is the broadest 'middle range' pressure placed upon those that are reticent to rise up - hence the destabilization of root infrastructure, like food, housing, etc..

History is rife with these examples of Divide and Conquer strategies, and the overextended duopoly that is the US government, is the mitigating force between the wealthiest and most powerful industry in human history - fossil fuels - and the general populace. Therein lies the path to ultimate reemergence: remove the root cause of the cancer.

@numodular @woodenmachines

To put it simply, we can't afford *not* to strike

@Nonilex
If you're throwing your Leica M around like that, you must be in a truly threatening situation. Was he arrested? I hope he's okay.

@derteckelansich

I mean right??

I posted a follow up.

@Nonilex @derteckelansich Hilariously in his first update on BlueSky, while noting he was Ok, he also mentioned how his camera held up, leading someone else to note that only a REAL photojournalist would also slip in a gear review while describing being tackled and pepper sprayed.. 😂
@Wraithe
He should ask for some money from Leica for the review. 😉
@Nonilex
@Nonilex as an amateur photographer photographing protests in DC I often worry about this as well.

@Nonilex sadly there's more of this to come. I'd predicted the phase where journalists get snatched and disappeared before they'd come for ordinary citizens, but should've known they'd go the opposite direction. Darker days ahead.

The "journalists" just normalizing the decline and amplifying regime's statements without calling out the criminality have a lot to answer for.

@ottaross @Nonilex
They've been aiming at journalists with "less lethal" rounds for years. But today when everyone can film, they're going to grab whoever is available.
@cshlan @ottaross @Nonilex always have to mention KillerMartinis who got her eye shot out in Minneapolis in 2020 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Tirado

@Nonilex Rifle association is ok, Leica association is collecting massive destruction cameras and is declared illegal
@marioostolaza
The rifle association has always been on their side. When it pushes propaganda about being anti-government overreach it only means a left wing government.
@cshlan They're always fighting against the facts. #photojournalism against their 1984's dystopian unreality
@Nonilex the fact that they felt the need to confiscate equipment tells you everything. documentation is resistance. keep it goin 💪
@Nonilex this the jack booted thugs we were warned about.
@Nonilex Proposal for new hashtag: #ICETEA, for “ICE Terror, Extraordinary rendition, & Assault”. They love their cute acronyms, right?

@aprilfollies @Nonilex

It's quite clear he was using the Leica as a weapon (for truth?) and was jolly lucky not to be shot.

These #ice agents need to protect themselves from exposure. Hopefully he got his exposures right.

Great advert for Leica. Even if Americans will now have to pay 10% more for them*

* 25% from June 1st providing Europe stands its ground.

@Nonilex Powerful photo

@Nonilex Astonishing watching the photojournalists becoming the subject matter.

Fascism sucks.

#Leica, I hope you hang that foto on a good spot
@Nonilex wat i See in the picture "the last hope"
Fun fact: that is a $4600 Leica M10.

@flowti

When earlier post identified the camera as a Leica, I knew the journalist must have felt very threatened past a simple beating to throw it away from themselves.

@flowti
And the lense probably isn't much cheaper.
@Nonilex Wait, if he threw the camera, how was this photo created? I know, random question, but my brain is thinking too much...

@Gryficowa

I credited the photographer who took the photo & named the photographer who was pummeled by ICE. Reread post.

@Nonilex Boggle. Photojournalists are magic. At least, these two are.

@Nonilex

As someone who has done a tiny bit of photojournalism in the past, this is so heartbreaking and infuriating and terrifying.

The USA is no longer a safe country for US citizens.

The Democrats in Congress better shut this country down before allowing this to continue. As the minority party, they can't do much, but they can cause a government shutdown.

@ZhiZhu @Nonilex there is barely a courageous member among them
@Nonilex a normal scene of any democracy sadly. If they include this kind of pictures to history books, there wouldn't be enough pages to have them all. But I don't think they would share this pictures, back in the day we didn't have photos, now we have, but they put a blindfold in our eyes.
@Napo no! It is not! I lived in several democratic countries and in none something like this ever happened. This is not how governments in western, civilized, democratic countries work/behave/treat ppl. This is 3rd world-rogue-state-government behaviour. Once your government normalizes this, you are living in a 3rd world rogue state. @Nonilex

@Ilka4You @Napo @Nonilex

Things like this happen in all democracies as overextensions of power that are talked for decades after. For example, in 2006 at Finland police were expecting a lot of protesters, and when the protests turned out to be smaller than expected, they turned on the bystanders and journalists.

I know similar cases in Germany, but for reasons of clarity I'll give this one, even as it means you have to use translation tools to know more if interested.

Smash ASEM – Wikipedia

@iju IMO isolated horrible/unlawful incidences aren't comparable with a systematic cleansing. The situation in USA is comparable to the situation GER 1933-1945, not with injustifyable single events. The political temperature is very much different - indeed similar eventls like those you mentioned happen again&again - horribly but not comparable. Main differnence: political motivation to control a people by violence & systematically ignoring law vs investigated isolated incedents. @Napo @Nonilex

@Ilka4You @Napo @Nonilex

I believe Napo was talking about the photo as a singular event. Those happen. Then there's a pushback when the civil rights advocates take the thing to court.

If you're speaking of the photo as an example of an endemic, then you're right as well: the lack of a successful pushback will lead to the system turning from democracy.

We remember that the repression of communists etc in Weimar happened before 1933.The noose kept tightening, until only the fascists were left.

@Ilka4You
And just so you know, USA is also part of the third world, is just that you can not pretend not be it anymore. This kind of things demostrate it.
No, there are no isolation on state repercussion, they have shot me, killed a fellow reporter, and so on, they always mess with the photographers in the protests, is how cops work.
So I was referring to the picture, is not isolated that photographers always end up beaten up by police. Is just how the freedom of democracy works.
@Ilka4You third world countries are almost all democracies. In my country a lot of people say that this kind of shit doesn't happen, but it does, they just don't live it because they are not a minority.
All states in the world use systematic violence.
@Nonilex everytime something like this happens it goes down in history documentation as government failure. Someone should tell Felon 47 he indeed made it into the books big time: biggest failure, weakest president ever.

@Nonilex

That's some kind of photography award right there...

... Doesn't care about his welfare, as much as about his pics!

@n_dimension Same thoughts here! Saved it for printing. Of course with credits to Pierre Lavie:-)
