Hundreds Of Clergy Issue Stinging Rebuke of DHS Sec. Kristi Noem’s ‘Immoral’ Mass Deportation Agenda
“As Christians, we cannot look away,” write the clergy members, who according to Religion News Service come from the Presbyterian, Catholic, Black Protestant, United Church of Christ, Methodist, Lutheran, Mennonite, Episcopalian, Anglican, Unitarian Universalist, Disciples of Christ and Baptist traditions. “We must act to stop this evil and witness to the goodness and dignity of all God’s children,” the letter states. “For us, the stakes couldn’t be higher. As Matt 25:46 clarifies, those who refuse hospitality to the stranger, refuse to see Jesus in the faces of the persecuted, stand condemned.”
The open letter, “Jesus is Being Tear Gassed at Broadview,” references the Trump administration’s violent attacks on several faith leaders, some of whom have sought to bear witness outside a Chicago-area ICE facility only to be shot with pepper balls by federal immigration agents. Peaceful actions like prayer “have meant little to ICE agents,” clergy write.

A driver crashed into a #BorderPatrol vehicle near Oakton St & Asbury Ave, drawing a large crowd to the area who shouted at the agents, some of whom allegedly spit on them, acc/to DHS. 3 #US #citizens in the crowd of #protesters were arrested as agents deployed pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

Agents issued one warning about #TearGas but did not deploy it. They fired #PepperBalls instead toward #demonstrators before #Chicago police arrived & cleared the roadway, allowing the vehicles with agents & detainees to leave.

A reporter spotted one agent without a #BodyCamera. Another agent used a GoPro camera in addition to a body camera. Some agents had numbered identifiers on patches on their uniforms. Others had identifying numbers written on tape.
The Sun-Times reported Friday that several federal #immigration agents have not worn identifying information, against a judge’s order.

In dozens of photographs at four locations, Chicago Sun-Times photojournalists documented federal officers failing to wear the “visible identification” needed to hold individuals accountable during the ongoing immigration “blitz.”
About 15 mins before that incident, #Bovino’s caravan stopped in the H Mart grocery store parking lot in Niles & detained another man who was just walking through the lot.
Friday’s arrests began around 9:30AM in the Albany Park neighborhood, when agents tackled a man to the pavement in the 3200 block of West Lawrence Ave after they accused him of assaulting one of them [no one including CST journos witnessed the alleged assault].

“I’m not [a] criminal. I’m just working,” Klim, 59, said shortly after he was released & the federal agents had driven away.
“I’m so stressed…I’m worried,” Klim said of his co-worker. “He’s got his car. He lives not so far from here, but I don’t know even [his] last name & I don’t have a phone number to his wife.”
