Unpopular reality check:

Most people in real life just call it Apple TV. They know what they mean. "The Apple one".

Renaming the service to Apple TV is cleaner, and totally a non-issue. Only nerds obsess about naming these things. Nobody in real life will ever say the sentence "The TV app for Apple TV on Apple TV". Only people here do.

then again some folks here are still convinced people don't use chatbots and they're a fad, so what should I expect
@viticci exactly. My mum calls it Apple Math.
@viticci Is "people are convinced chatbots are a fad" an attempt to dismiss legitimate criticisms of AI and the AI bubble?
@nileane No, it just means I disagree with that idea.
@viticci I sense you & I share a (big) frustration with several commonly expressed views here on Zealotodon.
@viticci how incredibly reductive of you

@viticci I mean, anecdotally, I’m in a class with ~30 other people my age. The professor asked how many people had used chatbots. Three people raised their hands.

So either people my age don’t use LLMs or they’re embarrassed enough about it to say they didn’t.

@viticci Everyone at work uses them. Even my peer just used Copilot (only worked approved AI) today to speed up a project. He’s not a nerd …

And let’s be clear, it’s just old nerds. The young nerds think we’re stupid for not using them. Just ask my 17 year old, lol.

@viticci they’re the next metaverse.

@viticci While I sometimes use chatbots, I completely understand why people avoid them.

Personally, I recently cancelled my Club MacStories subscription and put the money on NPC XL instead. I still want to support MacStories but I've found MacStories Weekly is too focused on LLMs and less interesting recently.

Honestly, I feel tech in general was more interesting before ChatGPT existed.

@viticci But I keep telling you: no one uses ChatGPT!

@viticci I've never heard anyone outside of Apple nerds call it Apple TV+. It's just Apple TV or Apple.

I think people imagine a world devoid of context and think things are more confusing than they actually are.

@mmiller94 I would say I classify as a nerd (well, I'm on here), and when referring to the service with friends I would always just use "Apple", "Apple TV", or "the Apple one" - @viticci is spot on.
@mmiller94 @viticci which is why I do hear people say ”Disney Plus” because there is a bit of confusion between the other things called Disney (the movie studio, the cable channel probably others) and the streaming service. Even with context you sometimes want the distinction. But it’s just not necessary for Apple TV.
@mmiller94 @viticci Yes, this. Context is everything here. “You can watch it on Apple TV” and “I bought a new Apple TV” are real-world examples that are obvious without explanation.
@mmiller94 @viticci Yes! Most normal people I’ve heard talking about where to watch Silo or Ted Lasso or whatever .. “it’s on Apple”
@viticci Pretty much this. Everybody I know just says, "It's on Apple TV." The celebrities who promote their shows on late-night talk shows say, "It's on Apple TV." Nobody is confused by this. We're all already doing it.
@ddribeiro I don’t even know anyone who says the plus. Even among the nerds I know with whom I talk about TV shows. I certainly never say it. They don’t even have a regular « Apple TV » service anyway. Everybody added a Plus to everything, to the extent of becoming a joke on The Morning Show. They should just get rid of all the Plus signs except maybe News+ as there is a free tier News. At this point it’s as weird as when there was no regular HomePod, just a HomePod mini.

@viticci Honestly, I also think people will not care.

Apple TV doesn’t even come up in conversations in my circles. 😆

@EdwinG @viticci for me it does “oh we don’t have Apple TV”
@viticci Well put and truer words cannot be said about this.
@viticci the rename sure seems like step 1 of offering an ad-supported tier and then having + be ad-free
@viticci Maybe so. But I think naming the box and the device the same thing makes a lot of people think you can’t watch Apple TV programming without an Apple TV set top box.
@viticci Frederico, *everyone in my life* is an obsessive nerd. That’s why they’re in my life!
@viticci This is a reasonable take, but in my experience it’s *already* confusing to people when I mention Apple TV the device, because it’s better known as a service. Like, if I tell someone I watch Hulu on Apple TV it’s often confusing and I have to explain the whole thing. (I suspect they’re about to rename the device though?)

@robotspacer @viticci I certainly hope renaming (or nothing) over cancellation 😬

(half our business is on tvOS)

@robotspacer @viticci don’t forget the Apple TV app has channels… not sure Hulu is one but Disney plus can be one, thus you can watch Disney plus in Apple TV on an Apple TV, Disney plus in Apple TV straight on your smart Tv, or Disney plus on your Apple TV device.

(And anyone else but you need to know/guess which one you’ve logged into)

@viticci I think it’s weird when normal people follow ”Brand Guidelines”. And I generally identify it as a marker of paid promotion.

I actually forgot that Apple TV+ had the plus. I’m sure when they named it they felt the need to differentiate between the streaming box and the streaming service but in normal conversation it is very obvious from context which one is being discussed.

@viticci why would anyone use apple in the first place
@waifu @viticci
Because everything else is so much worse?
@freediverx @viticci apple is overpriced proprietary trash that forces you into their ecosystem just like microsoft is doing lately. No idea what you're comparing it to.

@waifu @viticci
I dislike Apple for the same reasons I dislike any other mega corporation. But despite a decline in software quality over the last several years, their products offer better quality and design, and are far less user-hostile than anything from competitors like, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, or Facebook.

It’s not that they’re great but that they’re the least bad, especially when it comes to forced advertising, for which I have zero tolerance.

@waifu @viticci
Ironically, the best way I can describe Apple’s decline over the last 10 years is that they’ve become more like Microsoft.
@viticci 100% agree. I was telling a friend about ‘Platonic’ couple days ago (which is great) and what I got asked was ‘is it on Apple?’

@viticci Yes, they already do call it that. That's the problem, they're different things, they should have different names.

Witness my parents who just bought three new TVs because they wanted to watch something on youtube, so they needed a TV with youtube on it. They couldn't use the AppleTV box because the show is not on AppleTV (the service).

We need to be pedantic, because it's the right thing to do, for clarity.

@viticci I was going to post something similar, but this is perfect.
@viticci I think the box will probably get a new name anyway. Something with pod in it.

@viticci having never actually subscribed I only found out it wasn't carried Apple TV, when I saw the logo changed.

(Ngl though, I don't think it was worth rebranding. Also see no reason why anyone should get upset about it, ever.)

@viticci On my cable box, whose remote allows for voice searching, I have been able to open the streaming app by saying "Apple TV" no problem. Now the actual name will match what I've been saying (although when the app gets updated with the new name, who knows).

Conversely, saying "Disney" tunes to the Disney cable channel while "Disney+" opens the streaming app.

@viticci someone who is on mastodon is basically guaranteed to care more than the average person about small things. doesn’t mean it isn’t a valid criticism
@viticci that said, “apple tv” is a fine name for any one of the products, but IMO the other two should be renamed (the box) or rethought (the app—make it just for streaming the apple tv service so that the app and service are the same)

@viticci I can absolutely see confusion between the streaming box and the streaming service. Especially people who will think they need the box to watch the service.

I’ve definitely heard “oh I don’t need an Apple phone to watch that?” about Apple TV shows.

@viticci they just run the Apple TV app to watch Apple TV on their generic smart tv. Same as they watch Netflix with the Netflix app.
@viticci Apple’s only problem with the Apple TV brand is that many people aren’t even aware of it period. The device… We’re just lucky Apple has deep enough pockets not to have discontinued it already, because that would be a pretty efficient way to end the confusion for good.
@viticci Correct. Regular people don’t care. Hell, regular people don’t know this change occurred.
@viticci honestly the box is the one that least fits the name.
@viticci The confusing part will be if I want the paid programming what do I buy? I already have an Apple TV but have to buy something else for the programs, what is that now?
