Earther. Dad^2. Husband. Franco-British guy in London talking about UX, design, apps, tech, with a side of politics and climate catastrophe warning.

I’m not surprised by this; I think the huge cash burn rate combined with limited general appeal doomed this from the start. Literally zero non-tech people I know have any interest in a slop video feed and most of them get kind of offended if you ask them to knowingly watch slop.

OpenAI Shuts Down Sora AI Video, Disney Drops Planned $1B Investment

OpenAI is planning to discontinue Sora, the generative-AI video creation platform it launched in late 2024. Disney has ended its partnership for Sora.

A "Western Democracy" did this.

They tortured a baby.....

18-month-old Palestinian child, identified as Karim Abu Nassar, was tortured by Israeli soldiers in Gaza. According to these reports, the child was subjected to cigarette burns and had a nail inserted into his leg in front of his father, Osama Abu Nassar, during an interrogation. The purpose of this torture was to pressure the father into making a confession. 1)

It's clear that AI assisted coding is dividing developers (welcome to the culture wars!). I've seen a few blog posts now that talk about how some people just "love the craft", "delight in making something just right, like knitting", etc, as opposed to people who just "want to make it work". As if that explains the divide.

How about this, some people resent the notion of being a babysitter to a stochastic token machine, hastening their own cognitive decline. Some people resent paying rent to a handful of US companies, all coming directly out of the TESCREAL human extinction cult, to be able to write software. Some people resent the "worse is better" steady decline of software quality over the past two decades, now supercharged. Some people resent that the hegemonic computing ecosystem is entirely shaped by the logic of venture capital. Some people hate that the digital commons is walled off and sold back to us. Oh and I guess some people also don't like the thought of making coding several orders of magnitude more energy intensive during a climate emergency.

But sure, no, it's really because we mourn the loss of our hobby.

For some reason "AI is just like watching Netflix" is back in my feeds so I took that as a sign to update my data tracking for Netflix. The company's energy use rose 1% from 2021 to 2024. Compare that to: Google: 71% Nvidia: 88% Meta: 96% Microsoft: 119%

You are being manipulated.

Ever since I read Steve McConnell's After The Goldrush, I've been listening to people tell me why software engineering should be exempt from the kind of controls that e.g. electrical engineering or medicine or plumbing are subject to.

The reason is almost always "Their work can do real harm".

Yeah? Look around you, dude.

"The practical consequences of an unexamined inner life at scale are not theoretical. The social media platforms built by people who believed behavioral data was a reliable substitute for understanding human psychology produced a decade of engagement metrics while user wellbeing declined and our entire social order decayed. The engineers who built these systems weren't malicious; they were optimizing for things they could measure, because they'd implicitly accepted the view that measurable outputs were a sufficient model of human flourishing. Goodhart's Law exacted its toll: the measure became the target, and the target was not what anyone would have chosen if they'd been forced to actually specify what they were aiming for."--JA Westenberg https://www.joanwestenberg.com/marc-andreessen-is-wrong-about-introspection/
