Mayor #Baraka "committed trespass & ignored multiple warnings" from DHS officials who told him to leave the facility, alleged #AlinaHabba, fmr #Trump defense atty & interim #USattorney for #NewJersey.

"He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody," Habba, wrote on X.

…The mayor's admin filed a lawsuit in late March to block the opening of the #Newark #immigrant #detention facility, arguing its operators failed to obtain the proper permits & violated city code.

#Trump #DHS spox Tricia McLaughlin in a *statement* [propaganda] called the incident "a bizarre political stunt" by a group of #protesters.

The group that included members of #Congress "*stormed* the gate & *broke into* the detention facility" as a busload of detainees entered a security gate, McLaughlin said.

The protesters "holed up in a guard shack, the first security check point," she said.

Listening to #NJ Rep #RobMenendez interview on MSNBC, the #RasBaraka arrest was even worse than I thought. The 3 congresspeople did not go to the facility to protest. They went to view the facility because the mayor hasn’t been able to gain access. Congress members are legally allowed to visit detention centers without notice to perform oversight. The 3 reps entered , the mayor did not. They were asked to wait. They’d been waiting for 1½ hours.

Rep #RobMenendez said #ICE agents learned Mayor #Baraka was outside the facility. Menendez said the agents “were on the phone with somebody” who told them to let the Mayor in, then escort him back out beyond the facility gates. The agents did exactly that. Once beyond the gates they arrested him.

That is insane.
